Lucksall - meltwater and risk of flooding?

We're planning on taking ourselves to Lucksall later this month, encouraged by the great reviews it gets, including those here. It looks really nice, and in a lovely area too.

One of its attractions is being slap next to the River Wye, which is a good thing to be by. I spent many happy hours paddling kayaks down much of the length of that in my yoof.

I also have a memory of Spring camping by the Wye at Symonds Yat in the 1960's, when after torrential rain the whole thing rose by something like 8 or more feet overnight. (We were climbing well down the bank to launch kayaks in the evening, by next morning the river had come up to the top of the bank to meet us!)

So with all the snow which is hopefully going to be melting some time soon, I'm just wondering... If you've been there and can offer reassurance about the habits of the water there, or even dreadful warnings about when your caravan turned into the second Noah's Ark and you didn't get to land until Chepstow, I'll be grateful to read. Though I might not believe you if you tell me you floated as far as Chepstow...

I don't know the hydrology of the area, but I would suggest that if you think there might be a risk, then there probably is one, so go elsewhere.

Why not ring the site and ask the warden/site operator?

Lucksal does have notices onsite about potential flood risk. .... so by no means impossible!

The Wye is typically less than 2m below the site level. The site is completely level, so once breached the entire site would flood.

It is indeed an excellent site in all normal circumstances.

Certainly the statics are in an elevated position. Nice enough site but not one I shall use again as I don't like the exit.

Simple really. There is not a lot of visibility either direction but particularly to the right of the exit (not helped by the position of site signage). With my right eye not functioning to much extent I find it difficult as I have to turn my head to quite an extent to be able to look through my glasses with my weak left eye. So I cannot just glance right and left easily. I won't use Cherry Hinton for a similar reason. Locally there is a junction that I avoid onto a slip road as I have to turn my head too far to see through my glasses and I find that difficult due to arthritis in neck and spine.

I did send an enquiry about this to them. They've replied saying that while it is next to the river, so nothing can be ruled out, they've not had a problem for many years, and the other bank is lower than their side, so presumably water would disperse over there.

Hmm. It's geographically just right for where we want to go, but I think we might just wait a little while to see which way the weather's going. before committing.

I'm guessing that sites aren't intensively booked up this early in the year, or is that over optimistic? We're still new to caravans!

We were there last September which wasn't particularly dry and the river was fine but I expect that situation changes depending on what is happening upstream!

I thought the exit from the site was fine but we were going right out of the site.

Some pictures of the site here http://www.davidklyne.co.uk/luckshall_caravan_and_camping_pa.html

Where we live in Somerset, which is prone to flooding in some places we use the environment agency site. I put this link on another thread but it's useful for any area. You can see up to date levels and past levels. Just put in the place you need to know about.
