Woke up to some snow this morning, patchy as it had drifted in the wind. Dog thought it was wonderful, great fun.smile

OH said some of the roads were bad where the snow had drifted, but only one shop didn't get their bread this morning.  I walk to work so no excuse not to be able to get in.laughing

Snow seems to have abated now, but no chance of getting out of here as there is a foot of snow on the road.

Main road we can just see has a few cars moving so must be clear, I wonder if the milk lorry has made it to the shops, we used the last of our milk this morning!

If we could get to the main road we would be fine. Normally we have snow tyres on the towcar, but these are still the original tyres as we have only had the car for a year, so doubt they would be of much use in this much snow. This is the most snow lying for the longest time that I have seen here since I first came to Glasgow in 1963.

Airport is open, we have heard but not seen, 2 planes taking off, the cloud base is very low.

SIL is off school for a third day. DD was just saying one of their neighbours had tried to get his car out, but is now firmly stuck, so no side road clearing down with her either.

Our grandson spoke to us from his sledge this morning, pulled by parent power to the shops and then on to a big hill in N Somerset. smile

Pleased to hear Tammy can now go and enjoy a holiday.

Even though it's hard work in the snow it's been good to see people, big and small having fun. I have missed out on the sledging bit this time round. wink

Was reading this morning Glasgow Airport say its the worst snow in the history of the airport.

Glad to hear its stopped snowing with you we still have light snow but not really adding to what we already have, wind picked up again and still chilly in it but think temp is slightly up.

Just got back from walking down the high st to get essentials fora couple of neighbors.  Whilst I was out Mrs One was outside ........... making a snow beaver complete with her colonies neckerchief.  It’s bitter outside in the Easterly wind which is gusting to 40mph. All chores complete so going to light the fire and vegetate.

PS broke the ice on the pond this morning, it was just over 3 inches thick.  An hour later it had started to refreeze surprised

Thanks, TH and Brue. We will see what it's like on Sunday before deciding whether or not to move on down to York.

Hope that you are able to make it home tomorrow, Brue.

TG, If the conditions don't get any better will you still be able to get to the airport on Sunday?

Considering that we had the snow earlier than most places I think that we've been fortunate really. It's bowing a bit the moment but it's not that cold, nowhere In the region of -4.

Decided to defrost the car today and went shopping at Tesco this morning. Reasonably busy but well stocked, clearly the deliveries have been getting through. This afternoon we went out to Clumber to get a bit of very fresh air. The park itself was actually closed, although you could park on Lime Tree Avenue and walk in. There was actually not a lot of fixed ice on the lake, as the wind was so strong the waves on the surface had broken it up into chunks. It's  supposed to start snowing again soon, although I don't think we are supposed to get a lot.

I've arrived in Lancing but too early to start work. I expected the roads to be congested as they usually are at this time of day but for a change there was not much traffic on the A27 Shoreham to Lancing and smooth flowing. I'm due to start work at 17:00 and finish at 20:00. So only 3 hours to do unless it's busy and they ask me to stay later.

I'm hoping the weather will remain kind until I complete my shift! The temperature is supposed to start rising a bit this evening. Maybe the caravan drains will thaw out tomorrow. I hope!

Margaret went for her diabetic blood tests this morning. She explained to the nurse that she was concerned how difficult it is find a pharmacy that has stocks of needles for her insulin pens and test strips, she uses four of each a day.(she has an outstanding prescription with one  pharmacy but they are awaiting a delivery, delay possibly weather related)  Bless her the nurse set about phoning around local pharmacies until she found one with them in stock. She then set about raising an emergency prescription so that we could go and collect them.  We set off for Boots in the Kingston Centre, about five miles away, mission successfully completed. Margaret has only been using daytime insulin for a few months and gets quite stressed out by the fact that there is a difficulty getting essential supplies. She has persuaded the surgery to up the quantity per prescription but even that would not be enough for more than a months holiday. These things can be purchased online but they are expensive. Do others have similar problems?

Good question laughing looking outside at the moment we have another blizzard, not as heavy as yesterday though, its been on and off most of the day. Not had the sunshine today just light grey skies. Wind seems to have dropped a bit from earlier and temp appears to be above freezing.

Reports from Traffic Scotland say M80 open, looking at the cameras and reports from some who have traveled it  today we should be ok.

Forth Road bridge is closed due to high winds and swirling snow, but we don't go that way so no problem. All ski gates are closed.

I think the main problem might be the hour we will have to leave home  4.30 am as need to be at airport at 7.15 am (2 hr check in) normally we allow about 90 mins to get through at that time but given the conditions we want to leave earlier. Other option is to book a hotel and go Saturday teatime, OH monitoring the situation and will decide tomorrow lunchtime.

Longterm car park might be fun, they say the bus is running and car park ok undecided with so many flights cancelled not sure if enough cars have been using it to keep it clear enough to drive around it looking for a space, always difficult at the best of times. We only have my small Kia Picanto at the moment so not the best car for this weather, on the plus side its light enough to push it laughinglaughinglaughing

Hope you manage to get to York safely.

No similar problems David but I personally would ask the doctor to increase the length of the prescription and failing that would buy in a month stock to have as a 'float'.

Interested to read today that scientists think there may in fact be about 5 different or variants with diabetes and hope to develop something to recognise the differences so future prescriptions can be tailor made.

Would it be helpful to look at Diabetes UK for information and up to date advice? I expect Margaret has already looked but it might be possible to ask on there for other people's experiences?

Another grey day, no more snow, but windy and still below zero.

Everyone up here is fed up with waiting for the council to do anything, so most of us have been out digging out a track down the road and a wide enough bit at each driveway so we can at least get one car out.

Plenty of hands to help as the schools are all  closed so the parents  sent the teenagers out for a bit of exercise and fresh air, even the younger ones were trying to help, and one wee lass was going round handing out biscuits to keep us going.

Earlier I had a fruitless walk over to the shops to see if any milk had made it up here......not only was there no milk, Lidl were totally closed!

The car park there was total chaos with cars sliding all over the place, then a council snow plough lorry arrived, and promptly left as he could do nothing with all the cars abandoned at crazy angles.

Why be trying to clear a private car park when there are public roads that have not been cleared in 3 days!?

Hopefully it will be a bit warmer tomorrow and we can get the car out to the main road to fetch supplies.

Oh dear Kj it sounds worse than here.

I think because we have a bus route close by they have kept the main road into the village fairly clear. There was no buses until 10.00 am yesterday anywhere in Perth but today they all seem to be running fine.

We even had a snowplough/gritter go past the house this afternoon smile

Haven't ventured out of the village yet but plenty of cars coming and going, got fresh milk in the village yesterday which surprised me but delighted at the same time.

Hope you make it out tomorrow to the shops.

    Alan

It is early days yet and the surgery have just done that but if you think that for a three month supply she would need in excess of 400 of each!!!  We might well buy some extras if for no other reason than to stop Margaret stressing about it. She has an appointment with the diabetic nurse next week and I am sure the subject will be on the agenda.

OMG just reading weather posts. Stay safe, I read weekend is bringing more 😲🍙🐧⛄.

I have said before, and given due warning on here about UK weather when we've been in NZ. 2010, 2013 spring to mind for similar conditions to now. When we had a bit of snow before Christmas we gave away our sledge to the young boys, 5 & 7, who live opposite as we didn't think we'd be sledging any more! I'm so glad we did, hopefully they'll have had some enjoyment from it. When we heard on Wednesday we had 6 inches at home but bitterly cold. Mum ordered some oil and normal delivey a day or two, 13 day wait 😲. She always keeps it above 3/4 full and isn't afraid to use it. At almost 88 and living alone in a rural area I'm delighted she isn't afraid to spend her money.

Warmer than you 21c as I type on the decking,  slightly brighter today white cloud rather than grey and few bits of blue visible,  but breeze picking up again. We have a 30th wedding anniversary party this evening.

Brue I hope you can get your boiler going swiftly once you return home, if no one has been able to sort before, and that it warms quickly. 2010 we drained our systems and left no heat on, we came back earlier than we expected to do in the February, it was COLD and as we have a 1930s solid wall house it took a while to become cosy again. The walls had some condensation as they warmed. Never made that error again.

Stay safe and warm everyone. If any of you have to tow or travel carry blankets food and water regardless and take it easy and arrive safely.

Ps reading about someone stuck with a 5 week old baby as well as people towing I wonder about folks mentality at a time like this. Never knew about vehicle bans in Europe,  except emergency and military, before it was raised on here. HOW SENSIBLE, then roads can be cleared and 'normal' can be resumed swiftly. I'm in nz and knew about the forecast and conditions so no excuse for locals.

We have a friend down Somerset way who uses insulin, she does not seem  to any problems getting supplies.

I believe you can request at least a 2 month supply if going on holiday, I get 8 weeks at a time automatically and can request a double supply if going away.   For longer trips  our doc suggests stockpiling, they are fairly relaxed in that way.

We walked round to Asda this afternoon and the car park was packed. There was not a lot of bread left on the shelves, so I guess they'd not had a delivery this morning, although there was plenty of milk, not that we needed any.

Today we've not had any snow of consequence, although it's quite windy and cold. We seem to be in a quiet region, weather wise, with all the problems further north beyond Newcastle and south of the Humber.

Safe trip home tomorrow, brue, should you decide to head off.
