New booking system from April 2018

"The CMC is almost alone among holiday operators in operating an unlimited no-deposit booking system and - whilst I can see why many members like it - it's a significant hindrance to those like me who aren't prepared to make multiple speculative bookings knowing that I will cancel most of them later."
Let's revel in the joy of not having deposits rather than wish for the club to go the way of others.
Hindrance - why? I’ve never made multiple speculative bookings - it’s not compulsory, you know.
May I recommend the C&CC, Brian? They will happily take money for a deposit every time you book. The hassle each time you wish to amend a booking will be as nothing compared to the privilege of being able to pay that deposit.

And wasn't there a post in the last week where the CCC wouldn't give the deposit back due to some rule or other?

As far as I am aware Cornersteady the C&CC only refund after the start of the month before booking for certified illness, presumably death, or if weather is such that travelling to site is unwise. The case you refer to the person cancelled because the return home would have been through heavy snow according to forecast warnings and they therefore had to forfeit their £25 deposit

A couple of years ago we had to cancel a stay at a C&CC site on the day we were due to arrive as it was impossible to get our van out of storage. I assumed I'd lose our deposit but phoned the site anyway just to see if could be transferred. The warden/site manager said " phone me back in 5 minutes and I'll see what we can do." When I phoned back he'd overridden the system, booked us in for a month later and even apologised that it'd be a couple of quid a night more than the original booking. So it's not as clear cut as all that. As with apparently full CAMC sites, it always pays to phone the site itself - "it's good to talk" after all.
(Mind you, I'm still more than happy not to pay a deposit! )

This is great news, finally, the Club have seen the light and realized that there are some members that need to plan ahead. Opens up a whole lot more choice for me. Delighted.
Looking forward to using more CMC sites in the future, in our motorhome... yup, caravan traded in, motorhome coming in the next few days. No more towing! This is turning into a good week.

Presumably although on some sites at certain times you can't book a single night.
For a club a months notice is ridiculous David really. If I used all CC sites and move every 5 nights as I do a serious illness would affect £150 of deposits.

We have 3 sites booked, 6 nights on each, for Easter, just hoping now that we will be able to go as our caravan is still at the dealer awaiting replacement of the hitch damper.
We have no info as yet as to when it will be ready, but hoping it will not take too long.
If we have to cancel, what are our prospects of getting a refund? First night booked is 28 th March.

We will, if necessary, but hoping the van will be fixed in time as we are planning to visit friends too on the trip.
After all, how long can it take to get a spare part for a caravan?
I expect not having a roadworthy caravan would be considered a good reason for not being able to take a caravan holiday!

I don't know what you are on about. Do you?
I said that for me there is nothing good about a deposit system that requires a months notice. That is indeed my personal view. A view that requires no experience of the C&CC to hold and one that I do hold.
I have not, s far as I am aware mentioned difficulty in amending. Is it as easy as with CC? Just amend on website to change booking length, dates etc?
Not tried getting a refund and I have simply implied that it is a faff that I could do without.

You were, seemingly, remarking on my dislike of a booking system that I had not fully experienced. The point I made was that the system is not one I like with a £25 deposit and needing to cancel a month ahead for a refund. Why you should critcicising me for having a dislike of such a system I know not. No worries though

The new system is a good move, thank you CMC 😊
I also like no deposits on booking. Keep up the good work!

I was that person ET
The Camping Club system seems to allow for emergency cancellations, or extreme weather on the way TO the site, but strangely doesn't take account of possible extreme weather on the way home. I therefore cancelled our trip and lost my £25
However, that's what the T&C's say so on the actual day there was no argument. Do I regret cancelling ? Not a bit... The van is safe on the drive covered in 3 or 4 inches of snow, I am at home so know the house is safe too. The fact that 2 of my possible four 140 mile routes over the Pennines have, to my knowledge been completely closed off due to snow, and that further snow is forecast in the next 2 days only confirms that to cancel was a sound move ( Caravan Club Insurance Dept. please note )
Would I use the Camping Club again, yes of course, but in the winter months, when weather like we have at the moment can appear from nowhere, I will only book a few days before when I am sure the weather is favourable, or indeed use this club..

> The club has done it's homework on this and they did track those who did book a number of weekends/bookings, or multiple booking as Brian1 calls them. They found that it is a myth <
Can you point me to the original information on this Cornersteady ? If that is indeed the case then of course I shall have to apologise OTOH I'm not sure it is ...

I suppose equally we could ask you where your evidence is that such a problem exists to any great degree? Although I don't recall them doing it after the 2017 booking day the Club have provided such information in previous years that address your question. The number making multiple bookings was surprisingly small if I recall. Given a membership of 400,000 even a small percentage can add up to quite a lot but it is unlikely to affect the overall availability. I won't send you in search of the thread because you might never be seen again such is the labyrinth of back posts on Club Together
