Things to see and Places to go 2018
As we're a touring club I was wondering if members would like to leave some information as to what's on in their area in 2018 or things they intend seeing on their travels. Maybe it's a special anniversary or a festival.
For ourselves we are hoping to get to Leeds museum or Nostell Priory in Yorkshire to see the exhibition celebrating Chippendales 300th. Birthday. On from February.
As well as that there are special events taking place in Liverpool this year, including the Talls Ships return in July.
Hopefully a few more members will supply events that may appeal to others and give them some ideas of where to go this coming year.

We are off to something different in June. Pop up Shakespearean Theatre festival in York, based on Rose Theatre used in Shakespeare in Love film. Bought our tickets in December, but should still be some left.....

We have no solid plans but I'm hoping to have a short holiday on the Isle of Wight staying on Southland's Club Site at some point. I think Sam would really enjoy it - he's going to be 2 in March!
We are also going to join the National Trust as I haven't had membership since I was a child and I have some great memories of days out plus we live near to some great National Trust sites including Wakehurst Place and Ditchling Beacon.

Duxford Imperial War Museum air shows, nearest camp site the Cambridge Camping and Caravan Club site. The next air show is 26th/27th May or alternatively there are the many shows at the Shuttleworth Collection including historic flying displays. On site camping is available at the latter on some of the event days.
For train enthusiasts there is the Leighton Buzzard narrow guage railway which hosts events throughout the year. Check >here< Nearest campsite is Grove Lock CL. I rather fancy the Whisky Festival.
There is plenty going on in this area.

Agree Fish, some lovely train journeys there. We hope to do the West Highland line at some point. We have done the East coast line with all its stops in Northumberland and around East Lothian a few times, we really like North Berwick. North Wales is on our Spring agenda, could be a train ride involved as well.

If you are a festival goer the Larmer Tree Festival is back this year, you can take your van and enjoy staying on Cranborne Chase (edge of Dorset/Wilts.) The previous line up in 2016 gives an idea of who might be there, not just music, something for everyone.

If it's Chppendale furniture that you're particularly interested would definitely recommend Dumfries House, Cumnock, Dumfries & Galloway. https://dumfries-house.org.uk/ I wonder if they are doing anything special for the celebrations.
It's one of the properties in the HHA book so free entry for Friends.

Wherenext, if you're in the area see the statue of Thomas Chippendale in the Manor House grounds in Otley, (he was born in Otley) then call in at the Stew and Oyster next door for a lovely coffee with a free and delicious chocolate brownie.
One year some joker put a hard hat and goggles on the statue (when Health and Safety was at it's worst).

Worth considering the Merlin Annual Family Pass as Sam gets older. This gives unlimited access to Sea Life centres around the country, Legoland, Alton Towers, Thorpe Park, London Eye, Warwick Castle etc. In combination with CAMC sites and CL's you can make the most of the pass. If you get the premium ones it gives free car parking too. The advantage is you can go as often as you want, without having to do a full day to get your moneys worth. 3 visits pays for them, often on offer in January & May and with Tesco points if you have them.
Pitch up at a site late afternoon, pop into the attraction that evening and again the following day. We've been using them since our daughter was 2 and this year will be year 10 of the passes.
We have NT too, especially good for free car parking in the South West.

Countryfile Live is at Blenheim August 2-5. Bladon Chains club site or nearby CL's.
Tom Kerridge Pub in the Park in Marlow 18-20 May, Henley Four Oaks club site.

Have those male strippers been going that long?

When we went to the Leeds area we stayed at Glenfield Caravan Park, just north of Leeds, to the East of and fairly close to Harewood House. Not a bad little site and very reasonably priced. Gemma, the owner does her best to keep everyone happy. Some of the hardstandings are a little awkward as they are concrete bases, but we managed.

I know I mentioned Liverpool in my opening post but I was reminded about another event taking place there this year when I saw it mentioned in the i newspaper today. The World Museum will be exhibiting about 180 figures from the Terracotta Army.
It will be on when the Wirral CMC site at Thurstaston opens.

There is only one place I would like to go in the UK. Sandalwood Bay in North West Scotland. Quite a trek and good fishing on the way but at 75 can I still make it!! This May will probably be my last chance so we will see. Can park overnight at Oldershoremore so can have long daylight hours.

Of Course You Can Make IT, Fman !!
Younger than me and with a similar taste in 'vans { OK OK Yours is bigger } but I just LOVE the far north of Scotland, my favourite is Altnahara but Cannot make it in one go so I pause at any two of Englethwaite Hall / Strathclyde / Bunree to slowly adjust to the speed of life & top up with fresh haggis !!

Used to make it past Glasgow in one go (350 miles) but like you now slowed down, and better for it. Make Morrisons Carlisle for late breakfast and then usually M74 to Cl at Moffat. for overnight. Superb fishing through Gairloch, Scouri and Assynt. Keeps me occupied for weeks. John Strang CL at Elphin is a good base and John will show you some excellent fishing.

Hope to make Scotland this year. We last visited in 2014.. Health problems put the kybosh on travelling there in 2015 and 2016. On our way there last year had bad news about my sister, and had to return home. So, plans this year are Edinburgh for the Fringe. Kelso for the British Caravanners Club FOL, and then take it from there.
We are in Cornwall for the whole of June, and there is plenty going on there during the month. Royal Cornwall Show, Wadebridge, Murdoch Day, Redruth , Golowan Festival Penzance., Sea Shanty festival, Falmouth, just to name a few.
Hope everyone has a good time in 2018.

Just a heads up for anyone wishing to see the Terracotta Army exhibition in Liverpool that is on until the end of October.
Make sure you pre book a time on the internet as most days you cannot just turn up and buy on the day tickets. no point making a special effort to get there if you can't get in.
ps Worth it.
