Why no theatre, films, radio?

Live theatre is great I like it, warts and all. Ballet is skillful graceful and entertaining. Opera is of no use to me as it's all sung in Foreign !!!. Films almost all end up on the TV anyway. Radio can be frustrating as station after station shoves out nothing but non stop music.

Our Christmas present is theatrical. We have obtained two tickets to see Richard III at the yet to be built Rose Theatre when it comes to York in the Summer. Full Shakespearean festival and village for a couple of months, it is the set used in Shakespeare In Love, now owned by Judy Dench. Proper Shakespeare, in the round!
If I could find a dog sitter, I would be off like a shot to see Ralph Fiennes in Antony and Cleopatra down in London as well in February!

Radio 4 default in this house too. Sometimes radio 4 extra 😉.
Don't do cinema here far TOO LOUD and other people annoyingly eating, drinking, talking, shuffling and walking about, not to mention mobile phones. Has said to local Odeon multiplex about how loud it is, it hurts my ears 😲. Stock reply it's set at the level advised by the film - lots of people say it's loud. Unbelievable. Used to love a cinema visit 😢

Can I have one of those stations please? The ones popular with those who travel with me appear to play almost continual advertisments interspersed with short bursts of (loud) noises. Glad I have Dire Straits on CDs.
Anyway, is "entertainment" not what people get peering through the net window curtains on Caravan Club sites?

It's just the hassle of London as well. OH hates the place, won't go.I know what you mean about soundtracks at cinema being too loud. We have stopped using the big multi screens. Sheffield has a small complex called the Showroom, it's actually an ex car sales showroom, but transformed into a cinema complex with a few screens, smaller halls and a rather nice eatery. Much nicer. Films shown are a touch quirkier as well, rather than box office junk all the time.
Mind you, the odd numpties still get in.....we went to see Mr Turner there one afternoon. Just us and an odd looking couple in. They sat directly in front of us, and she started to talk as the film came on, telling him how she like Turners art, blah, blah blah....... I was icily polite, but asked them to shut up and move. Which they did. She was so intent on nattering, I don't think they even knew we were there!

I suspect because TV is nationwide whereas the other things mentioned tend to be more local. If I go to Glyndebourne to watch an opera the possibility that a post on here about that opera is not really going to help anyone else because the event is over. On the other hand if I mention a TV programme it's more than possible others can see it on catch up. I am sure there are lots of people on here that go to live theatre, ballet, opera and other such performances but they are all in the moment if you see what I mean? The exception might be a long running West End performance of a Play or Musical where the opportunity exists for others to see that performance and I think we have had such posts. Anyone, of course, can start a thread on the subjects you mention but I suspect TV is more immediate?

We are lucky having the Crucible/Lyceum Theatres on our doorstep. Some very interesting and diverse productions on calendar for next year. Missed out on Julius Caesar, (sold out) but quite fancy Northern Ballet's Jane Eyre. Seen a couple of NB productions, both were excellent. I'd post a live link if I could but this website doesn't always let me, so just search Sheffield Crucible!

The entertainment section is quite mixed, I sometimes post about theatre visits in the general chat social section, same as others. I'm afraid it's low brow for us over Christmas, Cinderella beckons....
Will be booking the Theatre on the Lake at Keswick in January for a visit later in the year. Always got something on the go.
The two Churchill films are on our list too.

The Minack Theatre in Cornwall is a brilliant experience. The 'stars' out at sea are often a bit of an audience distraction though!
ENO did a wonderful Summer evening performance of Opera favourites in partnership with English Heritage a few years ago, using some of the properties as a natural stage, we found this a lovely change from being inside.

There are regular reports of Theatre actors losing it with numpties who haven't switched their phones onto silent mode, must be so annoying for them as they concentrate, as well as audience. Some folks have strange ideas about behaviour in certain circumstances.

I do try to post if we're going to the cinema or the theatre in Bristol. I guess there are less replies than on TV because it depends to some extent on other folk having seen the same films/shows or going to see them in the near future. Whereas TV programmes are more immediately accessible to more folk. (Does that make sense? We've had visitors over the weekend so the wine/beer consumption has been considerably higher than normal!
)We've got tickets for the Carol King musical - Beautiful - and for the new production of Miss Saigon at the Hippodrome later in the year.
Like TtDA, we try to get to The Minack once a year and have seen some great shows there - last couple have been Spamalot and The Producers and we saw Fishermen's Friends there a couple of years back.

It does annoy me at live shows when folk can't seem to keep quiet, or not eat or drink for an hour or so during each half of a show - but that doesn't annoy me half as much as the ones who just have to get their mobile phones out within seconds of the interval starting!

Never ever seen that. Mind you live theatres tend not to sell the junk usually associated with our Americanise cinema chains. Always amuses me that when you go to see a film they are very keen for everyone to turn off their mobile phones but are perfectly happy to sell noisy food!!! What happened to the days when you purchased a box of Maltesers, a Kiora Orange Drink at the same time as your tickets and maybe an ice cream in the intermission?

I don't mind what folks wear, it's the talking and phones going that annoy me. You have to dress warmly for Minack, even after a hot sunny day it can drop very cool. A good padded cushion is a must as well!

Talking of little theatres, this is a lovely one for families if you are in the area.
