There are 2 charging points in our Asda car park, just don't try using them because the ignorant so and so's park there when doing shopping even though they are not EV's yell

Pretty much the same as the' drop of and pick up point' cars parked no one in them, Taxis can't get in to pick up or drop of customers, so block the road, car park becomes grid locked yell selfish ignorant people.

If its not a wind up then i would think the Merc salesmen and service fall over themselves to "talk" to Malc

He seems to spend a lot of time there, probably needs to find another 'free' coffee shop, that one is costing him a fortune laughing

    Brue, hope OH recovers soon.

Not my idea of free 😲😲. No additional charge for it maybe, but if you can make hundreds nay thousands as a result it's worth their investment. Spratton and mackerel 😉

We are away in our new van for the first time  we arrived on site at half 2. Van towed well behind the Volvo but it is very icey. Once we arrived on site it took us a while to work out how the heating system, water system etc works but we have it working now so sitting cosy in the van with a beer and SWMBO has a wine. After setting up we couldn't be bothered cooking so went and had dinner in the pub across the road and had a lovely meal. Site is not too busy but still a few vans on site.

Good luck Francis (and Easy T) when he gets around to it.

We changed our van this year and after the second night felt really at home in it. As you say the first night or so is finding out how everything works and then it'll take at least a week to remember where you put all of the stuff. smile

Can't wait to get back into it.

Mmm, yes, but I hate to see someone seduced by a car salesman!

My OH is a maths and physics graduate, her Mum was  an accountant, and she herself looks after our finances and is very astute.

When she bought her Smart just over 4 years back, they tried to persuade her to take a PCP.     We sat and listened to all the great sounding figures, our eyes glazed over!

The fact you do not actually own the car without paying this balloon figure was almost glossed over, really they expect you to roll over into a new car  and PCP at the end of the 3 or 4 years.

Wanting to buy cash, as we always do, got you no perks or discount, so the salesman suggested an alternative as he could see we were not falling for the PCP route.

We put down a £4k deposit and put the rest on Mercedes finance.  This got us a manufacturers contribution to  the deposit, then we were allowed to pay off the finance without penalty after 6 months.

This meant, compared with paying cash, overall we saved £500.

I find it very strange that buying something using borrowed money works out less expensive than just paying for it up front yourself.

    Madness!

I also find it strange that someone who professes to have no back up savings and a relatively low income can be offered so much credit.  Sounds like irresponsible lending to me,  and a possible recipe for disaster.

We're very much of the same ilk, Kj.

When we bought our car 2 years ago we told the salesman not to waste his breath on PCP. He told us to take out the finance from the manufacturer and we could pay it off after just 2 months instalments giving over a £1,000 saving on the cost of the car. I read through the agreement and then reread it and couldn't find a flaw because there wasn't one. Of course we paid it off after the 2 months.

We did have an advantage as we know the salesman's aunt although we didn't know that at the time. It came out in the conversation. He knew he didn't have much wiggle room.laughing

We have no knowledge of the PCP way of buying cars other than what we have read on here  but I don't think it would be for us.

The last car I bought was my little Kia Picanto just before I retired, it was  pre-registered so I got it at a good price. I sold my previous car privately and bought the new one cash.

When its time to replace it I very much doubt that I would buy another brand new one, maybe a year or 2 old or another pre-registered one. The minute you drive it out the showroom you lose so much money (some more than other's)

We treated ourselves  to a new towcar last January, a pre registered VW Touareg, £10k of new list price, 14 miles on the clock.

We always buy  new, but we usually keep our cars for at least 10 years, so the depreciation evens out, and we like to know that nobody has mistreated the vehicle.

Our daughter has our old Volvo V40 , now 15 years old, it has been a great  car, one of the oldest we have had in the family.  Low mileage though, which does  help.

Malc.....the £3817.38 is not a deposit on the new car, it is the balance due on your current PCP minus the miserable  £6000 they are giving you for the current car.

Your new PCP must be a no deposit one, or they would be asking for more than that.

If your balloon figure for the new car will be £5000, then you are financing the full £17060 minus the £5000, so £12060.

Is your APR 3.9%.,  or is that the flat rate on the whole amount?

You're right, KjellNN about the deposit paying off the balance of the PCP on the current car. So no deposit required on the new car. Yes, they are giving £6000 for the current car and I did debate with them that it's too little as the car was only 12 months old and had done less than 12,000 miles. They argued that this was correct and couldn't do it any other way and that I must accept it if I wanted to proceed. I'm getting £4500 from the government for changing to electric which means I'm only losing £1,500 on the current car. So £1500 depreciation net cost is not too bad. It's worthwhile because I'm getting a better car with more facilities than the present one coupled with the huge saving on petrol costs. Once I get delivery of it, I will never have to visit a petrol station ever again and this will make me better off by £45 per week! There's also the convenience of not having to drive there and wait in a queue of cars to fill up petrol. If I plug into the caravan socket, this job will get done overnight whilst I'm asleep! When I wake up in the morning, the car will be fully charged ready for use. What could be better than that?

Yes, I believe the new deal is 3.9% APR on the whole amount.

You've forgotten about the £45 a week saving in petrol costs, Tammygirl!

My plan is to fully charge before leaving from Gatwick. This will be enough charge to do the 30 mile commute to Worthing. Then I go to the dealer in Portslade to top up the charge for work. So I start work with a full charge. By the time I finish work, I should still have enough charge left to get home, if not, there are charging places locally.

Yes it will consume some time, perhaps a two hour wait to get a full charge but worth it to be better off by £45 a week.

That's right, brue, but my usage will be mainly urban usage doing deliveries in Worthing, Lancing and Shoreham. There is only a one mile commute from my present location at Lancing Fruit Farm to get to work.

When I take up the seasonal pitch at Northbrook Farm, Worthing, it will be about 8 miles commute there and back from March to November. So Gatwick is a long time away, November 2018 to March 2019 by which time I will have learnt how to manage the re-charging and where to go to do it.

That's not quite right, Bakers2. The commute from Gatwick to Worthing will be in daylight as I will need to leave mid-afternoon about 3 p.m. to allow sufficient time for a top-up charge before starting work. Depending on how many deliveries I do, I may need another top up charge to get back to Gatwick. So I will need to learn locations where this can be done late at night.

The other thing to bear in mind is the government plan to ban the sale of petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040. EVs are the future! It's just that I'm embracing this future now!

I'm all for embracing new technology Malcolm. However, if I had just put close on £2000 on my credit card for my seasonal pitches, I would be thinking twice about adding another £3,500.

Plus although Gatwick is a long time away and you will have a better understanding of how long the batteries will last, it does no remove the need to charge once you get to Worthing.

What if the charging point(s) are in use.👎 More and more folk are buying electric vehicles, so increasingly likely. Also can you really see them remaining Free.

You mentioned the other day you needed your heating on 2kw to keep warm in this latest cold spell. As did we whilst away over this last week. Have you factored in the cost of the gas you will use to heat the van, while the car is charging.🤔
