Best route to Hawes site
Hi, we are going to the Hawes site for Christmas and would like a bit of route advise.
We will be traveling north up the M6 and I asked Google maps for the best route. They tell me to go up to M6 junction 36 then come off and take the A65. However it seems to me that coming off at junction 34 onto the A683 then A687 would be better as its 10 miles shorter.
Has anyone got any experience of the best route to take when towing a caravan on a Saturday morning.
Many thanks

We were at Hawes yesterday and traveled the same way up the M6 from the Cheshire area. Definitely come off at junction 36 then onto the A65 to you get to Ingleton where you turn left onto the B6255 all the way to Hawes. We went this way and came back via junction 34 as per sat nav but the J34 route is a lot narrower and actually slower.
So come off at J36 of M6 turn right onto the A65 heading towards Kirby Lonsdale at Ingleton turn left onto the B6255 (signposted Hawes) which takes you all the way to Hawes.
We were on a serviced pitch and they are great, out of the way & nice & quite. I reviewed the site last night if you want to check out my review. If you want to go to any off the Pubs then consider booking in advance. We had a great time.

Thanks for your quick replies I will take note and go to J36.
I have just read your review Chrystal and must take issue with one point. You quote Hawes as being the highest market town in England! As I live in Buxton which is 1000 feet above sea level I believe that makes us the highest
Once again thanks for the advise.

And about 5 miles after turning off the motorway onto the A65 there is a petrol station on the right with a large forecourt and sensible priced fuel.......

My apology Chrystal it was Fatbelly!!!
Though to be honest Buxton's market is so tiny it is a insult to call it a market town!

As above, I have also come off at J34 and towed along the 683, then the 687, and I wouldn't do it again either. It's longer using J36 but a heck of a lot easier. It;s a bit of a pull up out of Ingleton but the 6255 is a spectacular road. (not sure that I would like to do it in the winter though, very exposed)

I lived in Hawes with my family when I had the privilege of being the vicar of the parish (Hawes with Hardraw) from 1981 - 1985. Even in those days we did not like towing on the A683 and A 687. I would definitely opt for the A 65 and approach from Ingleton which is a far better road. An alternative is to approach form the East and then up the dale. Of the two I would choose the Ingleton route.

From here in cheshire junction 36 and on to ingleton as others have said turn left sign posted Hawes and wait for the magnificent view of the settle to Carlisle railway Viaduct. We were very lucky we stopped for a sandwich and coffee just in time to see the Flying Scotsman transverse the viaduct what a site. Been loads of times since but not seen that magical moment since
