Where did I say that we watch rubbish T.V.?  In actual fact, we don't watch much T.V. at all, I would prefer to read!

Well...... the most memorable advert I've seen this Christmas is the least tasteful.  The kids are going to love the Smyths ad.  smile

There are so many parodies of the JL adver already. Even "This Week" used a parody of the advert in part of its programme. I must admit I didn't find the Boris and Theresa parody particularly funny, Boris doesn't usually need any help to appear silly!  However the one I thought was quite funny was the Gruffalo one but be warned don't go showing it to children before seeing it yourself!!!

Strangely, I didn't think I was someone who would let advertising affect me, BUT I decided that two of my grandchildren would really like the 'Starry NIght' nightlight advertised in the John Lewis ad.  (But we didn't buy it from John Lewis).  Their birthdays are this week - and the first one was received yesterday by five year old Amelia, and got the expression 'Absolutely Awesome, GrannyVal and my best ever present'!  And even better was her brother Sam looking on enviously and saying 'Amelia, can I sleep in your room tonight so that I can look at the stars'.  (He gets his on Thursday - we have three grandchildren in the same family who have birthdays within one week in November).

I would normally say 'No', but as said, something grabbed me this time, and directed me towards one of the products being advertised (albeit not the store doing the advertising).

I would have said I'm not a sucker for advertising, and would consider myself a bit of a cynic when it comes to being convinced, and yet I bought what they were showing on the John Lewis advert.  I too, would like to know 'Why'?  Was it the advert, was it the product, would I have thought of it as a great present otherwise?

But then again, some of us of a certain age could probably recite the advertising jingles that we grew up with.........!  Everyone must remember 'You'll wonder where the yellow went................'  (Pepsodent) and  how many of us went out and bought the toothpaste?

Another post of mine (on another forum) demonstrates the power of advertising. In 1980 (when my son was just a month old) we saw a newspaper advert from Eurocamp for camping holidays in Europe.  We requested a brochure on Christmas Eve and it was delivered on Boxing Day.  We booked a holiday as a result of this advert for May the following year, and have been back to France every year since 1981!  Unfortunately only once or twice did we use the original advertiser and very rapidly went on to do our own thing.

There certainly does seem to be an element of people looking forward to retailers Christmas advertisements. In that respect John Lewis set the bar quite high some years ago, in advertising terms, so I suppose there is an expectation that they need to do better each year which is almost an impossible task? It also seems to be the one the media pick up on each year. There will always be a split of opinion with those that love them and those that hate them. Whether it changes shopping habits is difficult to tell. A common theme in the JL ads is that they are selling the JL brand rather than a product which is a bit different to most retailers who are suggesting you shop with them because of the range they have available. At the end of the day if these adverts don't convert some into shopping with a particular retailer then it's a lot of money down the drain!!! I think the JL ad cost £7 million.

I remember the Nescafe Gold Blend 'romance' with the rather dishy Sharon Maughan.

I don't watch a lot of TV with the exception of a few news programmes and a few dramas. But being a regular JL and Waitrose and M&S customer I get e-mails from them and they usually launch these adverts on their YouTube channels before they appear on TV. The youngsters seem to view everything online these days so they will have a fairly accurate idea of how often they are viewed online, perhaps a bit more difficult just from the TV so they will be able to judge success or otherwise.

New John Lewis ad is good, but the new Christmas Heathrow Airport  advert with the bears is lovely.

John Lewis's advert is totally rubbish this year.  But I do like Waitrose.  Have even had one or two pints in that pub as well.  On the sad side though, my Uncle Reg was killed when cycling downhill towards Macclesfield, although this was back in the 1950s.  He hit a car head on, didn't stand a chancefrown.  His older brother, my dad, never drove on that road since the accident
