May be they are being clever.   Knowing that everyone overloads*.  I you get weighed you stand more chance of being under 3500kg if you get weighed.  If they put 3500Kg on it probably still overload it.  It's human nature.

.......but when you 'upgrade' the weight of your caravan the only thing you are supplied with is a sticker/plate to put instead of the one by the door and a new NCC certificate.  So if the plate by the door has 'no legal significance', presumably it doesn't matter if it is displayed or not?  Or have I got it completely wrong?

I can't recall seeing a weight plate near to or in our gas locker, but I could be wrong?

I've also wondered how easy it might be for anyone to fake one of these stickers, and for that matter the NEC card/document.  They don't appear to be that 'substantial'.

David, if you look on the caravan talk forum, there is a thread that is entitled something like two plates on my wagon.  The first post includes a reply from the NCC made to the OP.  It is in my opinion an interesting read.  It does though also take careful reading to determine what is being said and what is being implied, not always quite the same imho.

Thanks Boff.  I'll have a search to see if I can find it.

If only a new NCC sticker is provided, then there must be another plate elsewhere (the type approval plate) and that would already have to show the higher MTPLM. If not, both plates would have to be exchanged. Either way, the Certificate of Conformity must agree with the type approval plate.

I have a sneaking suspicion that some caravan manufacturers may not appreciate that the NCC 'plate' doesn't comply with the requirements applying to type approval plates. For example, the NCC plate doesn't show maximum axle loads nor the type approval number. If that is the case, they may think that the NCC 'plate' alone is sufficient, which it is not.

Thanks to Boff.  The answer to many questions can be found HERE, but it takes a bit of reading through.  Scroll down and look at the replies in red.

You are welcome David.  It is in my opinion the first post that carries all the salient information.  The next 6 pages might be diverting and amusing but not necessarily illuminating.

You are right about the first post carrying all the information.  Thanks to Lutz also, whose reply crossed with my previous post.

I don't quite get Boff's point. If overloaded but under 3500, it is still overloaded because the plated max of 3300 has been exceeded although the chassis is capable of the extra load.

I was being facetious, but if you look at the thread in another forum I mentioned and David linked.  You may find that your plate may be strictly decorative.

What a interesting topic only trouble is with all the post on this forum and the  one on Caravan Talk which is very comprehensive I’m still not sure wether to have the free weight upgrade on our new van or not,it will give us an extra 33kg .Will the extra weight shown on the door sticker really put a buyer off when l come to sell .
