i would ask the garage before fitting it that if problem is still there after repair that original is put back free of charge. visit honest john website as i am sure they said to a question put to them that ECU's can be repaired but cannot remember the company that do it. try ECU repairers in google and see what come's up. worth a try.

What has all this to do with caravans?

There are some rather rude people replied to my question to them first I am not a armchair mechanic it's the garage who has told me it's the ecu also I have been had over by cowboy mechanics in the past with probably 35 years guessing what the problem is . number two if you where not willing to help just because it's not about a caravan its about the thing that tows it why bother committing . I have found a supplier of reconstruction ecu that come with 12 months warranty and past it onto garage . to the people who have given helpful advice thank you . to them who have been rude I hope your wheels fall off .

Yes I've found a company that repairs ECU's and past it onto the garage last week but when I spoke to the company they gave me a ruff price for worse case not cheap so I am wondering if the garage is wrong and it's not the ecu do I still have to pay for it experience in the past is some mechanics just seem to guess what wrong and are happy to just keep fitting new parts until they eventually they find the fault regardless the cost to the customer and they. probably 35 year's experience guessing and billing .

Yours, too, YP.
I'm afraid you brought it all on yourself. A caravanning forum isn't the ideal place for such a question as we are neither legal experts nor know the ways of your garage.
Good luck.

I am just worried that if they are wrong I'll get a large bill and still be left with a faulty car estimated cost £1000 + if a rebuilt one is required it's not a common car so second hand is not possible it's just that I've had bad experiences dealing with garages before just like many also have . I've never used this garage before they where recommended but they have had my car for over 4 weeks every time I phone the seems to be a new excuse why nothing is happening .

It's like asking a Barrister you employ on an hourly basis what the eventual outcome will be prior to the trial.
You will get opinions on here, but by asking the same question to the garage is the only way to bring you the answer.
Not quite sure if my reply falls into the 'hope your wheels fall off' category or not, but I'll re-torque them just to be certain.

before I left the trade after 35 years ,I ran the workshop for a Vauxhall main dealer, and this was a common problem with customers that they did not want to commit to the work because of the cost,(and rightly so),so we asked them in and explained what we had gone through to come to our conclusions as to why that part needed fitting ,the problem with electronic parts is that it can put a fault in to another part ,that cant be tested until the first part is fitted
I would ask the garage what have they done to come to find the faulty part and what is the cost implication if that part does not cure it

Like HD, I also worked all my working life in the Motor Trade, the last 12 years as a part of the companies technical support team. In my experience actual ECU's don't fail that often but it's not unheard of. Like HD explained, get them to explain in more detail how they have arrived at their diagnosis. Hopefully in simple terms to help you understand.
One issue I have come across a couple of times with such components is it's actually not faulty but the software has been corrupted.
I can recall one vehicle that had all sorts of expensive parts thrown at it by our workshop but the problem remained. Myself and a colleague looked at it and came to the same conclusion as everybody else (ECU issue) but it had been replaced ?. Further digging identified that software from the ECU taken off had been transferred to the new one. A new download from the Cummins website was done and the fault was gone .
Just in case anyone is interested, the fault was the throttle response was lost when the gearbox was put in Drive or Reverse.

Thank you for your help that is what my car is doing at first the fault was only when restarting from warm very underpowered turn off and on a few times it seemed to reset then was OK but then also started doing the same thing even when starting from cold I was first told it was Fuel temperature sensor .car now going to a ecu specialist who can recondition repair or worst case can build a new one although my car has two ECU's hopefully they will sort it as I am getting very frustrated .
