Not as exciting as yours AD, but we visited Gaydon Motor Museum near Warwick. We also did a lovely two week tour of South and Mid Wales, lots of places we had never been before, with some great castles and historical sites.

We have had a very quiet year due to illness/ bereavement, but hope 2018 will see us venturing out more frequently, to pastures new to us.

After over 25 years of heading west and north we tried southbound to Italy for the first time and loved it so much that we went twice in one year, once in late spring, and again a second time in early autumn, even though someone ran into the back of the caravan at the end of a traffic jam on the ring road around Milan..

We joined Historic Houses Association this year and enjoyed visiting properties that we had never previously visited including Parham House  near Pulborough.

Visited Wales for the first time for many years and explored more than we had previously done.

Once again, we've owned three caravans in the same year.

    In '93 Trophy, Bailey, Bailey.

    This year Coachman, Hymer, Hymer.

We visited the Isle of Wight and bought the ferry tickets with Tesco vouchers for the first time this year. We also joined English Heritage this year.

I inadvertently dragged the caravan up three snowy passes in Switzerland following a disagreement with the satnav. Although I was a bit sweary at the time, my wife and granddaughter all agreed it was a brilliant experience and far better than the motorway despite the extra 3 hour drive.

No, I paid that by direct debit. It was about the time when I booked the ferry crossing to the Isle of Wight so I had already used up all my Tesco vouchers on that.

We headed south of the equator to Mauritius back in February. First time we've been that far afield. A brilliant experience, staying in 3 different regions. So much more to the island than beaches and water sports. And such friendly people! smile

We got a Lakeland Terrier puppy and at sixteen weeks took her away in the caravan for the first time. She was SO good and we all had a great time. (Thank you for this thread David, it’s really interesting seeing what folk have done for the first time - three caravans?...)

After dropping MH off for service and warranty repair, used FREE bus pass to travel 100 miles home. I love a bargain!

Went caravanning! After years in tents we thought this was going to the dark side, but we love it already. We suspect not all places will measure up to the brilliance of NW Scotland, however.
Sadly that was the only serious trip - ill health here too, but it's inspired us to start planning next year's trip to the S of France. So though we vowed we'd never tow a van, we're very happy converts.

Well done Hedgehurst, get well soon, enjoy your France trip ( and don't worry about towing, it's less stressfull over there than in UK ).

Got to agree - we went to Mauritius in Dec 2015 and it is a wonderful island with such friendly people.

We always 'do' a new (to us) hot country holiday at this time of year and in a few days we're off to Mexico!

Thanks for this :-) I've driven in France before so felt reasonably confident but I'm interested to know why you reckon towing there is less stressful that this side of the channel. That's certainly encouraging!

It's generally down to the volume of traffic which on autoroutes and cross country roads is less than you find in the UK. However if you drive through major towns and cities it can be just as stressful as the UK and in some incidences it can be worse.

If you've towed the M25, M60, M42 etc anything else is a breeze. We once inadvertently found ourselves on Paris's Peripherique ..... it was just the same as any other traffic jam .... just on the wrong side of the road.

All these make sense, thanks! Glad to know there's still less density of traffic on country roads.
As to the Peripherique.... in our young innocence, our first trip to France took us round half of that, at rush hour.  Hmmm - not just the same as any other jam that time, as rush meant rush - all lanes belting along at maximum allowed speed, and no quarter given, so between my wife trying to navigate with an inadequate map and me trying to spot both road signs and any gap to change lanes, to be able to escape at the right exit, was seriously testing! We reckoned that if our marriage could survive that it could survive anything smile
Come to think of it, we were towing, but it was a borrowed, tiny camping gear trailer, so didn't really count as towing until 3-point turns were needed.

Well we had a first in over 30+ years. We didn't go anywhere, either with the caravan or cottage or abroad, in the month of May, one of our favourite months. We like to see bird migration and go before the hordes of holidaymakers descend. MIL managed to acquire a new knee in April and thus our plans were scuppered.

We have made up for it in the second half of the year.

And yes, you haven't lived until you've towed around the Arc de Triomphe, trying to exit the way you inadvertently came. Dratted roadworks on the Peripherique.

The great thing about France, Hedgehurst, is that if you go any time between March and September you can always find a campsite in whatever area you are in so can pull over into it if needed.
