Seriously though, all this hype/panic about the death of the internal combustion engine is so far away at the moment that its just not worth thinking about, Hybrids are still going to be burning fossil fuels for years to come

Agree with the two M's above. Most people who buy cars now haven't got a clue what mpg actually mean? I think it's just a way of saying this car is more economical than that one.

I honestly don't know what my cars fuel consumption is and it has never been a consideration when buying a car either. I just put fuel in as and when needed, either filled to the brim or £40 or £50 worth at a time. When we had a Lexus 3ltr a few years back that was very good on fuel but as I said earlier the Jag was awful, but seriously quick off the mark if you used all the 250 horses

As my odometer reads miles, why wouldn't I want work out fuel consumption in mpg? 😉 Just stick to metric or Imperial ..... don't mix them. It really gets me on the telly when they say 20 meters away & then in the next breath 20 miles away 😕

We never worried about MPG when on a touring holiday with the caravan. Suv's make great towcars but have the aerodynamics of a brick and we accepted that while towing, the vehicle would use more fuel than when running solo. When the fuel gauge dropped, we topped up. Never crossed my mind about how much or little the fuel for our chosen holiday was costing.

Some of these claims amaze me. I am pretty light-footed (I currently average around 45mpg solo with a LR Discovery Sport auto which, from what I read is above average), but I recon I only ever get about 65% of solo consumption when towing. My previous Freelander averaged around 38mpg solo but only 24mpg towing and prior to that, my Mercedes E class 2.2cdi would do up to 55mpg on a solo long run but never made it to 30mpg when towing.

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee 3litre automatic that realises 21mpg. That is driving around town.
We have just covered 3000 miles down to Switzerland and Italy where we made 22 mpg.
Not very economical compared to the Kuga we had but with the Jeep we feel safe and secure towing our van and I felt less tired and stressed driving those distances.

Last time we towed with petrol was 2004 - 2l RAV4 - 25.2 towing, 41 solo. 1000kg van over 3 weeks.. with 2l diesel, with the same van and now a 1250kg van, it was 30/31 towing 55-61 solo. Just gone back to petrol, thus far 41 solo, but new car and only 500 miles so far, towing yet to be determined. do remember though, getting 29mpg towing in the mid 1970s from W Yorks up to the north of Scotland & back, Sprite Alpine behind a 1256cc petrol Viva.

I only used to get mid to high 20's towing a little Eccles with my petrol Mondeo.

I tow a 1,436 kg MTPLM caravan,- usually loaded to around its full permissible weight, and vehicle loaded as well - with my 1.9TDI Touran (max. trailer weight 1,500 kg). Depending on terrain and wind conditions I get between 28 and 32 mpg when towing. Solo I get around 50+ mpg, but the best return has been in France when the upper 60's was achieved.

My family have butchers business the only ones that ask for pound weights are those over 55 all the young ask in kilo's. Even l do everything in imperial and then convert to kilo's and millimetre, l even workout in my head what it was in old money, sad isn't it

I am happy with a combination. Length measurements usually cms and metres, except for road distances where I use miles. Fuel, buy in litres but calculate mpg. Weight, usually kilos / grams. Liquid ml / litres, except for beer. Pressure, psi.
As far as the butcher is concerned I just point to where he should cut, or buy a number of slices, however if I was to give a weight it would be metric.

Same as Steve, it's just the unit you can imagine, like I can imagine long long it would take me to walk a mile, or drive say 60 miles (and give a good estimate towing and not towing. but would have to work out how long that would take if given in km. I can visualise and more or less accurately a draw a meter but not two feet?
When I was teaching this stuff I always started with what size telly you got then? It was quite funny to see how they bragged about who had the biggest telly but had no idea what inches really meant or looked like?.
Also I buy stuff by the actual money value, those steaks, a full tank, or go by the pack price. I do work in metric weights though, never understood why anyone wants to work in ounces pounds and stones?

I have just completed my last trip of the year from North Lancashire to the Cotswolds. The run down on congested M6/M5, 210 miles @ 34.2 mpg. Coming home on M5, A roads from Worcester to Warrington, M56 & M6 took about 30 minutes longer, 219 miles @ 33.9 mpg.
This is with a Euro 5 Merc C220 Cdi estate with manual gearbox towing 1,450 Kg. My annual average towing mpg. this year is 33.14. Last years figure was slightly better @ 33.65 with an overall average including mainly urban solo running of 40.45 mpg.. With 7 weeks still to go, I have not done the overall calculation for this year yet.
