Grade 2/ 3 insulation in M/H

Hello, We been caravanning now for 35 years we do love it, but as health take it toll, for the past 18 months, reading MMM magazine very helpful,

We like to know what year did grade 2/3 insulation came in on M/H,

    Elsa, I am working on my tablet at Castleton site and the info you want is on my desktop pc at home. If you do a search you will find the information you seek. However, the grading is less useful nowadays because some manufacturers put in limited insulation and a big heater to achieve grade 3. The grading reflects the time taken to achieve a given temperature. 

    If you have specific reasons for your question, it might be necessary to expand the topic to cover all factors that you need to consider to be warm in a motorhome.

    My Marquis Majestic (2016) is Grade 3. At the moment I only have 'home-made' windscreen insulation, although I'm not sure how much better the professional external TaylorMade ones would be other  than the condensation issue. It has been fairly nippy the past couple of nights but if there was serious cold, I suspect the heating would have to work fairly hard to maintain temperature inside. I think it is slightly warmer than my Grade 2 caravan(2006) was.

    I  tried  using  the m/van  without  the  'screens  this  year,  purely  due  to  the  bulk,  but  its  markedly  cooler / warmer  using  them.

    At  present  I've  got  "Taylormade"s  but  in  the  past  I've  had  "Silver Screen"s  and  cannot  honestly  state  which  is  best.  Both  keep  it  cooler  in  High  Season  and  are  a  blessing  in  deepest  Winter.  There  are  variations  of  both  makes  for  length,  fold  down  centre  section  etc  etc.  the  best  move  would  be  via  the  web  sites  since  "S / Screens"  do  not  attend  shows

    We reckon our external silverscreen is the best thing ever, winter or summer. We have the facility to pull down a section. The temperature difference is amazing. We ensure that the engine vent is set on recycle in the cooler weather to help stop cold air coming in.

    Elsa, I'm back from Castleton so can answer your original query:

    Grade 3 emanates from the Section 9 of the British standard BS EN 1646-1:2012 entitled ‘Leisure accommodation vehicles. Motor caravans. Habitation requirements relating to health and safety’ which sets out three levels of motor caravan heating. These are:

    Grade 1: No heating.

    Grade 2:  When the outside temperature is 0°C the internal temperature must be held at an average of at least 20 °C for a defined period of time.

    Grade 3: When the outside temperature is -15°C the internal temperature must be held at an average of at least 20 °C for a defined period of time.

    The standard was published on 31 July 2012.
