I would also be interested in any replies to this as I am wondering about getting the same or similar. I would normally use my phone as a WiFi point but I recently had a bad experience where it seemed to use about 5GB of data in an hour. I had recently changed to 4G but previously on 3G it was quite efficient in the use of data.

We use a 4G children's tablet from EE. It cost about £100 and then £10 per month for 10gb of data. It can be as fast as my home fibre broadband on occasions, up to 30 mb.

We have yet to use all the data in any month despite both of us using it quite comprehensively every day we are in the van.

I would go for an unlocked mifi so that a data sim for any network could be used such as the 3 Network's 12gb Internet on Legs which you can often pick up for around £25. The data lasts for 12 months.

Amazon stock devices such as the Huawei and the sims. It’s what I nearly bought until I decided to stick with tethering to my iPhone which worked really well, signal permitting.

Having had a 3G mifi device on 3, a smartphone on O2 and an EE tablet I find that the 4G EE signal is much stronger than either of the other two, in fact I am not even sure if 3 has much in the way of 4G coverage at the moment

I have also found that EE has much better 4G coverage than O2.

Like all things WiFi, it’s all signal dependant. I have apple products and can provide a WiFi hotspot for my other devices through my phone, so not paying for a second means of communication.

I wouldn't necessarily agree that EE has better coverage overall as it varies from location to location. Whilst EE might be better in one area, O2 or another provider may well be better elsewhere.

Unless we have a crystal ball, it's pretty much pot luck which is why some people carry data sims for more than one network.

Personally, I'm happy to get 3G or 4G and find there's little difference between the two.

I have an EE one. Cost around £14. I used it on last trip as OH had set up a social forum in the two days before our 5 week holiday. We were using 2 commercial sites as well as one without wifi. Bought far more than we needed - 15gb. paid £22 for the 15gb. Buying wifi on the two commercial sites would have been £20 so quite happy.

Generally use CC wifi and consider it to be good value for us.

I have an unlocked MiFi currently on Three Mobile which is great if you intend to use it for a month or more otherwise I find for short trips of a few days it is cheaper to use my pay as you go phone as a hotspot. Data top ups are usually only valid for a month so It really all depends on how much data you use in a given time as to which is best for you. If your on the road for a lengthy trip it is better to buy a new data sim with data valid for a year rather than top up and to have a wider choice buy an unlocked MiFi.

i go along with TW, my Vodafone sim only contract gives me 5gb a month and this is more than enough to run our two tethered iPads when in the van....and more robustly (usually) than the clubs' (either one) wifi....

as i dont use much data when at home (not away in the van) i effectively have a full pot for our uk breaks...

Vodafone are also very generous when travalling abroad in that they add a further 2 gb of 'roaming data' so we get 7gb a month when overseas with no charges...

why would i need another device and sim with associated charges?

drawbacks?....my pnone is 'old' by modern standards (cast off family 4s) and has no 4g capability but 3g seems to do the job very nicely.

apart from that, £15 a month for all the mins and data we both need seems pretty good deal to me these days.

The economics might be different if you rent your phone and have oddles of free data bundled in with the rental rather than pay as you go. Also as far as I know you cannot use a phone as a hotspot when on Continental trips. That is certainly the case with the service provided by Three Mobile and this was the primary reason I purchased a MiFi

We have an inexpensive Huawei device but tend to pick up on our phones using giffgaff. We are not on contracts, use cheap Ulefones and pay as we go. Seems to work well in most places.

Difficult to say but you should be able to check how much data your using monthly on your phone. This month I have used 1.4Gbs but I have also had my home desktop available. Last time I bought 12Gbs I used it all in about 10 weeks while on Continental trips. I have topped up with 5Gbs for a month for use in the UK and used it all and it is rare for us to download any films or TV while away but I think on that occasion my other half watched catch up TV for an hour.

firstly, Peedee, it really depends on which supplier and which type of comtract when it comes to being able to tether...

my Vodafone Red pay monthly sim only (£15 unl mins, unl txt, 5gb data) certainly allows full usage for tethering here and abroad..(extra 2gb).

i was looking to check out a new phone (or new sim) with other providers and there are 'provisos' with some...Three especially.

the feel at home deal (which was one of the first to 'allow' uk allowances to be used abroad, ahead of the EU directive where everyone has to...) only applies to certain levels of deal...the cheaper ones do not allow tethering.....so not for me...

David, re data usage....the 7 gb (total) that we have when 'away' is more than sufficient to allow OH and I to browse as much as we like over a month...we do not download film or the like, which will eat your allowance.

the Vodafone app also allows checking of your usage as you go through the month.

believe me, ive tried really hard (tight git) to better what ive got with more data or less cost, but i simply cant get 5/7 gb of tetherable data, usable abroad with any other supplier for anything like the same cost.

you could try Giffgaff (O2) or Tesco or Plusnet or.....but there are likely to be restrictions in usage one way or another....

I am on my second month with Huwei MiFi - just got rid of Virgin media home broadband - got a deal with 3 for 40Gb of data per month for £17 pm which covers all my home requirements and certainly all my caravanning needs - don' t use club wi fi anymore.

I have not had any reception problems at all as yet and am getting average of 74mbs speed- better than my Virgin 100 mbs !!!!!

Worth a try in my book .

For info: ALL 3 products are supplied unlocked even if they display the 3 logo at start-up. EE, if asked, should be able to unlock their devices at time of purchase as it is company policy on PAYG devices. However the Alcatel devices they supply are not as good as the Huaweis from 3.

You can usually find used but guaranteed mifi units from the Computer Exchange (www.webuy.com) for around a tenner but many of them are 3G only. The Huawei 4G units are in the 5000 series model number and cost a little more but work much better.

Having used GiffGaff on O2, EE, and 3 I would recommend EE for preference. Not only is their 4G fast (like nearly 50Mb/s for me!!) but as they have the contract to provide the infrastructure for the replacement for the emergency services Airwave communications system their coverage will be significantly better.

    Hi

I have one supplied by three.

20gb per month cost £10.00 per month

used it to download films and stream live tv

it works on 4g most of the time only switching to 3 g in low signal areas.

Went over limit once ( 2 weeks holiday and kids downloading everything)

This cost approx extra £20 but have now set control so no extra can be used
