Best Route to Castleton
I'm visiting Castleton tomorrow and wondered if anyone could advise on best Route. We are travelling down the M1 from Leeds and google maps suggests leaving the M1 at Tankersley but it seems long way travelling down the A61. I wondered if it was better to continue down on the M1 and come off further down, accepting it may be a longer route
many thanks

Hi best come off at junction 36 Tankersley and take A61 Sheffield south, follow road into Sheffield.
keep in outside lane as you will need to turn right after you pass swfc hillsborough ground on right and opposite the owlerton speedway track following A57 road.
The Road takes you through a shopping area but road ok for caravan keep going on through shopping area through traffic lights and passing towsure on your left and look for left turn sign A 57 Bamford take this left on riverlin valley road ( nice tree lined road ) at t junction at end of this road turn left again following Bamford through lovely countryside still A57 at traffic lights Turn right A6013 Bamford follow this road through Bamford to t junction turning right at t junction A6187 Hope and keep going through Hope to Castleton site on right.
hope this ok

Hi
how did you go on were the directions ok ?

I didn't get to use as ended up having to go south first so came in from another route. I was going to use it going home but apparently the road is shut at Fairholmes so not sure which route I can use now! I definately won't be using the sat nav given some of the tiny roads we have gone down whilst not towing.

Fairly steep!!!! there's an understatement. Winnats is not only very steep but narrow & often with sheep about I wouldn't want to do a hill start with a heavy caravan in tow!

If you are faced with a hill start on Winnats pass then you you are travelling away from Castleton. By the time you are driving away from the site you will have sussed out whether it is wise to go that way with a caravan.

Narrow? Agreed that there are wider roads, but I wouldn't say narrow .... there's plenty of room for a caravan or 7.5 tonne waggon. Leaving there a few weeks ago, there were still cables across the road from a light festival/show, so had to slow right down to cross them ..... if you just have the two pedals, a hill start is easy 😉
Winnat's Pass The 'easy' bit is 1 in 10 but goes to 1 in 5 ...... at least you get a run up to the steep(er) bit 😉 I know the CC suggest you turn left out of the site, but Snake Pass does seem to be a very long way round
