Motorway roadworks speed restrictions?

On a recent Motorway journey with the caravan I suddenly realised I didn't know if the ordinary speed limits apply.  i.e.  on main roads 50 instead of 60 - so on the Motorway in roadworks and congestion do I have to down speed as per other roads - if there is a 60mph limit down to 50?  and 50 down to 40?  Dithered for a little and decided to go with the flow and watch the lorries?   I don't think there was a possibility of speeding at that time as there was far too much traffic but I know I should know!

If the motorway speeds are limited then that is your limit solo or towing on Motorway.

Thank you EasyT - I think I may need a refresher driving course - but as I recall my children were woefully ignorant about Motorway driving after they had passed their tests.

It's only 60 on dual carriageways and motorways unless otherwise stated Pippah  is that what you mean by main roads ?

Pippa most motorway roadworks have a 50 mph speed limit unless a lower one has been requested, There will probably also be overhead cameras checking, these are based on average speeds so if you emerge at a faster rate than expected you will have exceeded the speed limits. This also applies on some roads like the A9 in Scotland were average speeds are monitored. You follow the instructions, if the gantry or whatever shows 40 mph you slow down to that speed.

It was the congestion speed limits round Birmingham that made me think I didn't know!  Although it didn't look like it - I am clear on every other road - just when the overhead gantries showed 60 I wondered if I should be going 50 as per main roads.

Our nearest M-way is the M1 in Northants, where we quickly arrive at the interminable 50 section with attractive narrow lanes and concrete barriers, which alarmed me as a new 'van tower for a while! Pippah45,  I've towed our van through there a number of times now at a steady 50 under the watchful eye of the yellow cameras, and they've not sent any complaints with picture evidence yet, in nearly a year, so I'm fairly confident that 50 is OK.

You may yet be able to cruise at 60mph in road-works if the Gov't have their way in the not too distant future.

The yellow cameras work on recognising the number plate on the front of the towing vehicle.  As far as I know the technology does not run to also checking if a trailer is in use.

So a vehicle towing would be checked as if it were solo.

There is an urban legend that the average speed camers are not connected.  Can anyone on here state categorically that they have been fined, summoned or prosecuted in any way based on the yellow motorway/trunk road cameras?

I know of someone who has been fined using evidence from  temporary average speed cameras used on road works on the M23 about 3 years ago.

    I never risk it.
