Motor home insurance
i am sure this has come up many time before but
i have had a caravan for many years and have maximum no claims discount on the insurance for it through the caravan club. I have a car which also has maximum no claims discount
My wife retires in next few months and we have decided to change our caravan for a motor home and do some extensive touring and last week we ordered a new one to be delivered in Mar/Apr 2018
i have just started looking at how much it would cost to insure. Only checked through club so far but coming in at over a £1000 assuming I cannot use my no claims discounts currently built up on car or caravan. Anyone got any tips on how to get cheaper but good insurance for the motor home please.

We did like wise and the only way to do it is shop around. We looked at the usual suspects C&MC, C&CC, Comfort, Caravan Guard but eventually went with Safe Guard (Swinton). Good price, knew what they were talking about, new for old up to 2 years, unlimited mileage, EU cover for 365 days and includes UK & EU breakdown cover.

You will have to build up your no claims discount on the motorhome as a new vehicle, you cannot use your existing no claims if you keep the car as well. Some companies do give an initial discount though, I did this through Saga.
This year I've insured through the other club. Got a great deal and a bonus through them is that if the van is a write off in the first 3 years from new they will replace it with a new vehicle.

I swapped my Saga car insurance to the MH and was surprised at the modest increase in premium for the remainder of term. It will Uber interesting to see what the renewal premium is.

As someone who has a declarable health condition I have to search round for the best deal possible – and that was last week.
Every ones requirements are different – our ages (76/71), more than one driver, health, value of MH, where vehicle is kept (home drive, storage, road), yearly mileage and do you want Breakdown insurance in the UK and abroad and Legal expenses covered. (Ed – I think that's covered most of it!)
And this is included in their advertisement of the policy - 'No Claims Bonus is not a factor because the Policy is "net rated" and has a bonus amount factored in which gives a premium equivalent to a maximum no claims bonus.' -
My best price was with all the above included and came out at £340 - does that sound a reasonable price to you experienced Motorhome owners?

NFU will do MH insurance through any branch, DD. We use them through a Cornish branch and they're well switched on. It's good having a local office with real people to talk to.

Our experience with the Club was that they wouldn’t insure my wife due to an accident two years previously. Daft. Ended up with SafeGuard for about £400 and covering both of us plus continental breakdown. Very reasonable. Many companies will offer an introductory discount to help with the fact that you are not transferring no claim discount from your car.

I do the MH insurance through MHFacts Platinum and after spending a long time searching and getting quotes from Direct Line, Comfort, Saga, this Club and a couple of others the cheapest one that covered all I required was the Facts one.
As I said earlier we all have different requirements and no two quotes will be the same but they have come up best for me.

Hi, I also had caravan insured through motorhome and caravan club. When I purchased my new motorhome in May the club gave me an introductory 2 years NCD for my motorhome as my caravan was insured with them. For myself and wife it was just under £350 which I was well pleased with.

You're never more than 13 miles from your local NFU Mutual office so you'll have a local office. Tap NFU Mutual into google and when on their website you'll easily find your local office. NFU & NFU MUTUAL are two separate companies. NFU are the farmers and countryside representatives. NFU Mutual is the insurance company along with financial servicies and Risk Mangement Servicies and NFU Mutual are the official insurers to NFU.
If they don't offer you the max NCD then if you go with them then ask for your policy to renew in 6 months time. Then in 6 months time the policy will renew and you'll be on the next higher NCD in 6 months rather than waiting for 1 year subject to no claims in the intrim.
Good luck.

I'd try Comfort Insurance. They paid out on my A-class windows claim a couple of years ago without quibble.
Its a competitive market so I'd expect you to get a discount for a good driving record whatever insurer you use - you might need to ask for it.
You have to consider any add on costs. For example if you are buying an expensive motorhome, one insurer might not insist on a Tracker device whilst a cheaper one might. Make sure your compare apples with apples.

I know that things change but when I bought our first motorhome in 2002 l had a car which I kept and had maximum NCD. The Camping and Caravanning Club gave me the best insurance quote for our needs for the motorhome (my wife and I to drive) which included some discount because of NCD built up on the car.
I believe the CAMC still offers to beat any quote by £25 I think providing that the insurer is not the same as the one offering the cheaper quote.(I have not used that offer as when I tried both CCC and CC (as it then was) were using the same insurer for my quote....and CCC was cheaper.
Whenever I have checked prior to renewal CCC has offered the best rate for our particular requirements.
Talking to whichever provider/broker you wish to give you a quote will mean that you can discuss your requirements and NCD history.

The club insurance team have been in touch and have said they will take into account no claims discount on previous vehicle. I assumed when completing the forms that this would not be the case (never assume) I will get a new quote through ringing them nearer the time of delivery of my new motor home.
Thanks for all the replies.

I will highlight this to Rowena, if you have not already done so?

Hi JME, I think I must be missing something here; MH insurance at £1500!! You must have one of them £250,000+++ Morellos!
My £70K Kontiki is insured with The Club for under £300. Like you I changed from caravan to MH, 2 years ago and The Club would not recognise my caravan NCB, so I used my previous car NCB, as I dont pay for car insurance now. I will be renewing my insurance next week just before I hop off to warmer climes, its due on 2 March.

Wish I did have one of those £250,000 Morello’s. It is a new MH but a fifth of the price you suggest. Had a quote from caravanguard of under £500 and 4 other quotes all less than half what I got from the club. I could have argued but guy I talked too didn’t seem to know much and when I got the quote I had had enough. Club told me to ring rather than use the website to get a competitive quote and now I have done so it has gone up 50%.
