Crystal Palace
I posted this in the wrong area earlier so apologies should you read it twice.
In October I am towing my caravan to the Crystal Palace site.
We shall be travelling from Birmingham and I was thinking of crossing the M25 somewhere south of Heathrow.
Has anyone else approached Crystal Palace from this side of the M25, iof so could you point oot any roads to avoid or an acceptable route.
Thanks in anticipation.

I don't live that far for the CP site (about 6 miles) and pass it every time I go to collect my caravan from storage in Orpinton. If you post a bit more information about your intended route I'll try help you with some local knowledge.

Wanderer, You can go round the M25 and leave it at junction 7, then north on the A23 to Streatham, then east on the A214 to Crystal Palace - but from Birmingham that's a long way round. I have always trundled along the South Circular Road from Kew Bridge and followed the directions in the handbook.
But Ian living nearby will have the right advice.

Yes that works but as you say a long way round. If I were making the journey I would come off the M25 at the M3 junction. Happy to give more details how to cut across London from there is the OP wishes
Whatever way you go, being London you are going to hit traffic but hopefully I can help keep it to a minimum and on roads more suited to towing

The M3 junction is well to the south west although it does enable you to fairly readily pick up the south circular. It'll be a slog whichever way you do it except in the middle of the night.

Not as far as getting to the A23 though, The route I have in mind is the way I always use when coming home from that direction including from the M1. It doesn't involve using the south circular either.
But as said time of day will play a big part in the journey. Given that you have the 12 O'clock rule though, if your coming off the M25 at about 10-10.30 it should be fine.

We've done this trip several times without problem, leave M25 at J7 , M23, A23, A232 and A212 almost straight to the site. Just need to be on the ball going through Croydon because of some lane changing.
Be aware , the last two times we met people who had had their vans damaged by cyclists trying to squeeze past and , who on each occasion, disappeared into the distance.

Why not come of m25 junction 4 down the a20 to catford and follow the south circular

Some interesting routes have been suggested.
I will print off your suggestions and mull them over.
Ian I cant give you anymore info other than what I have. I have never visited Crystal palace before.
I don't mind how far I have to travel around the M25 if it means a safer with less aggro.
Thanks to everyone for your input.0 -
Ok, The advice about coming off at J7 would suit you then if you don't mind a longer way round.
As an alternative. My route is, Leave M25 at the M3 junction in to London then exit that at the Sunbury turn off, A308. Pass Kempton park race course, turn right at the roundabout and cross Hampton Court bridge and follow the A309 on to the A3, Leave the A3 at the Merton turn off' A298, which meets the A24 at Colliers Wood. Then follow the A24 and turn right on to the A 214 at Tooting Bec. This will then take you up to Crystal Palace where you turn left.at the end of the one way street. the Site is on your right but you have to go past it to the 2nd Roundabout and come back on yourself to get to the access road.
They are all nice wide main roads for towing and it may sound complicated but is a very straight forward route, and as I said, up until the A24 is my chosen route if on the M25 and heading for home.
Either way , good luck with your trip and hope you enjoy your time down here
