Site arival and pitch finding

I have a life and I've been living it, David. That's what took me so long to discover this little gem today. You could try it sometime.
Anyway, who said I'm not intreted (sic)?
€25 to reserve a pitch - have I misunderstood or is that another typo? Perhaps it's meant to be €2.50?

1) booking implies a financial comitment that would be lost if one became a" no show"
errr no, I book or reserve (I don't see a difference between booking and reservation btw) a club pitch and there is no financial commitment that would be lost if I didn't turn up.
I book my local Toby and no financial commitment there either, or do I reserve a table? I have a seat reservation, or book a seat, well moving on...
2) here we paid a small fee (I'm glad approx £25 is a small fee to you) to reserve the use of a particular pitch should we turn up in 12 months time, if we had changed our mind we would have lost a little less than one CAMC site fee
Forgive me for being pedantic but how does your two statements square up to each other. You paid a small fee which you would have lost, well that sounds like a financial comitment that would be lost if one became a" no show"
?
It does like you made a booking, it has all the marks of a booking (paid something for a specific) thing/date and it would be lost if you didn't turn up

now that would be a small fee

I actually agree with you but I think the 'animosity' possibly arises from the from the anti club statements in the OP which were stated as facts when apart from one site (Moreton), they are not facts are all.
artificial queues, mass 12 oclock arivals or problems due to late departures or 12 o'clock scrambles are endemic
and such statements as 90 to 100 vans turning up pretty much simultaneously does not really foster an atmosphere of rational debate?
Then the slightly, shall I say, contradicting posts of the OP where on one hand he states we're shortly off (to Europe)for 6 weeks, nothing booked and has often stated that is the beauty of touring over there but then states he has a booked and paid for a specific pitch on a specific site.
These statements makes people wonder about the serious question of the thread?
On topic. yes there are different customs and practices touring in Europe, as you and others have said it is far easier to tour and not book. However this does not (and perhaps cannot?) happen touring in the UK due to the popularity and smallness of the Uk compared to Europe. Also Many do and many do not tour over there, for those that don't we are rather stuck with what we have., or are we?

OK, and without furthering any animosity as suggested by WTG, David why not suggest a few things how it could work in the UK?
1 -
How it could work in the UK? Simple. More sites, larger sites, and sites which are open to all.
Europe doesn't have little CLs with their five vans only, members only rules - and no tents. Europe (for the most part) doesn't have Clubs , Club sites and Club rules. Europe has sites which are open to all on a democratic basis and which have space for everyone. The 50 year old legislation granting Clubs the power to open 5 van CLs - power which they zealously guard - has been the brake on camping and Caravanning for all that time. It's outdated .
WTG has described it exactly as it is, not just in Europe but in the rest of the developed world too.

Nirvana eh., wonder that there is anyone left vanning in the UK
Oh I forgot, the gassing, don't stay in motorway aires you won't be safe; the expense which is always glossed over, red pennant or similar, ferry fares, cost of passport and site fees and if you can only go during school holidays then they can be significant etc.. Before you set a foot on the ferry the cost to get there can be as much as £400/500. No doubt someone will be along soon to poo poo that estimate. Last year to Italy tolls and vignettes were in the order of £148 one way. So without fuel and site fees I spent between £600/£700 just to get to Pavia in Italy.
I travel over there at least twice a year and when I go I live by there rules and when I van here I live by our rules. Although I've stayed on 4 club sites this year I'm not really a fan due to the regimentation but thats the way it is. Our preference is CL's.
If we must do comparisons (its never like for like) at least lets have some honesty in the costs

Europe has sites which are open to all on a democratic basis ... sites that are open to all?
What on earth do you mean by that? Who is stopped from using touring sites in the UK? How are club and non club sites not open to all? Has something changed overnight? Are we now a dictatorship? What undemocratic rules are there in the UK that stop people using sites? Is this a wind up?
larger sites? again what is large? most club sites are 100+ pitches, some 250+. Some non club sites are even bigger. How big how sites in Europe?
Yes 100% to more sites but where and how?
The club only has 200 or so sites out of 2000+ in the country but your middle paragraph appears to put all of the problem onto club sites and their CL network (which btw no little site has to become a CL they choose to do so out of their own free will). You seem to be saying that the club with its small share of UK sites rules everything?
Yes I am sure that is is how is over all the world, but not here and unless it suddenly becomes cheaper and easier (as Oneput says) to tour there we are sadly stuck with sites as they are in the UK.

David you must really stop writing stuff that really isn't true. I have never assured you or anyone that club sites are perfect (please find a post where I have said that) nor have I ever, ever, said that any complaints made by people are erroneous (again please find a post where I said that). To do that would be the height of bad manners, if someone is aggrieved then who am I to say they are not?
What I have said and will repeat it here that I am very happy with what the club offers but that is not to say it is perfect or that complaints are erroneous.

Funny how this has gone onto spending costs. Yes there are probably the same but what about then you could factor in 'mileage costs' such as increased wear and tear on components and more miles means more frequent service costs?
Not the mention the time spent travelling, days v hours to that sunshine. Nothing wrong with that but not my cup of tea

This discussion has got quite heated with some argumentative posts - which is what we don't want to see on Club Together. Feedback, suggestions, difference of opinions are all always welcome on Club Together but please keep the conversation friendly and free from arguments otherwise we will need to close the discussion and contact users regarding the Community Guidelines. Many thanks for your understanding and please always keep the guidelines in mind when posting.

I reserved a pitch at a lovely site yesterday. I turned up when I wanted, paid a small fee (£12), had my choice of pitch, no queuing, fantastic views, hardstanding, lots of wildlife, great walking. Oh, and rain. Called a CL, great innovation, huge pitches, few rules, only common sense ones. No moaning so and so's either. All rather lovely really..................
Thank you CL owner and Caravan Club!

No - probably less as you will travel at a higher average speed and purchase fuel at a lower cost.

I love these games, so-I want to stay in the UK at the cost of £2500, but could go over there for £7000, right I'll stay in the UK. . . .Where do I claim my £4500 from please?. By this time next year I could be a millionaire

no of course not, if you both read my posts I did say increased mileage, increased being the operative word. People do travel quite a way over there going to the south of Spain for example will rack up more miles in their car's odometer than flying, more miles done = getting close that service interval. My car is 12000 miles or 1 year, which ever occurs sooner. I usually get to a year before 12000 miles. If you did 24000 miles in a year then that is two services rather than one. My dealer would (except I got them free atm) charge me a few hundred for a service, some cars possibly more. I've heard £500 plus for top end makes) now I can fly the same distance to Spain for as low as £20 (and have done so) even full cost will only be about £150, see what I mean?

Actually I would prefer Scotland but that's just me, you would prefer La Rochelle? why? The average summer temperature in La Rochelle is only 20C. I would need something higher to tempt me to go there
and see reply to HD
Post edit, you can fly Birmingham to La Rochelle this weekend for £48.06 out and £39.50 return. How much is it with car&caravan or MH I wonder? One hour 30 minutes each way, google says 11+ hours by car without a van of course and probably no breaks.
Know which I'd prefer!
