I'm sure we all have our own ways of slowing down and letting the engine idle, LL, as most of us have picked up these tips over the decades and some are engineers.

Easy, Brian. Get out before you turn the engine off. I said we'd all have different ways of giving the turbo time to cool.

The Telegraphs honest john is a believer in using premium fuels, especially in those VAG cars with the emissions fix. I have now used VPower/ultimate or similar for about 10,000 miles on a75k mile car and noticed on our recent trip to France how much easier the car seemed to tow uphill. Can't say the economy is significantly better however I am hoping the benefit comes with cleaner injectors resulting in less mechanical wear and tear and perhaps less clogging up and need to replace the DPF.

Skoda Octavia 2l Euro4 TDI took just over 30K miles before I noticed much improvement in solo mileage - towing seemed to stay around the same from the start. from 50K was getting even better- early days low 50s solo, last 3 years hitting 60 regularly - 58 on a fast trip to London, then onto Brussels & return, inc driving in both cities! & over Christmas too - with snowy roads on the return trip. (Also improved things when I fitted Goodyear's Grip Efficient tyres at around 50K - except in the wet!)
