One of our favourites is Chatsworth as there is always something happening at the big house which is within walking distance of the site. It might be a bit far south for you but Longleat usually has a wonderful lightshow and again an easy walk from the site.

Chatsworth is our favourite too and less than an hour from home. It has the Christmas market in November although you'll struggle to get a pitch, certainly at weekends although you may be lucky in the week.
Castleton has also reopened but, again, looks pretty full.

We went to York for many years but getting a pitch became too onerous so we now go to Chester Fairoaks. If you do not want to drive there are buses to Chester from the main road near the site and to Liverpool from the nearby shopping centre. Chester also has a Christmas market.

Unless you booked Chatsworth and Castleton last December not much hope of a weekend or Christmas,. We have booked Hawes weather depending has its 137 mile drive but mostly up the M6 any hint of snow will cancel, not journey to negotiate from the M6 in snow

I believe Mud and Snow tyres are compulsory in winter in Germany.
Have you checked if your tyres will comply?

Coniston would be on my list in the north of England, I see there's also a mid week discount there which makes quite a difference to the pitch fees. The Lakes out of the main season are a lot more peaceful and so many lovely places to visit.
There's a pub within easy walking distance of the site and it doesn't take too long to walk to Coniston itself via various routes including the lakeside walk.
