There are loads of threads on the subject in UK Sites & Touring, CB.
Basically, use what you have, search out the sites and plan your route avoiding the obviously unsuitable roads and you'll be fine.

Do you really want to do it? Because of the hype the route gets, it can be busy which destroys one of the attractions of Scotland. It's as though it is now a badge of honour. When we did part of the route, we had to pull over to let through a 100 vehicle cavalcade of SNP supporters on a single track road.
I would suggest ignoring the route and work out your own tour based on what you want to experience. Sometimes that will include the NC500 but my personal experience is that Scotland has much more to offer.
If you do want to go - and it is stunning in places - follow the advice from Tinwheeler.

Cant really go wrong past Glasgow, loch lomond is amazing, glencoe, bunree, then head for oban get the ferry over to one of the isles. We do it in a 7m motorhome, never plan just go with the weather. Last year we toured west coast & headed up to Orkneys, amazing the came back on the east coast.
This year we just stayed on Skye & Mull in june, skye was really busy so I would recomend you book if going in half term. As the weather chnaged we headed over to the cairngorns which was dryer and warmer.
we are planning another trip in September or October , hopefuly the see northern lights or at least the autumn colours. Its along way but worth it.
