I forget to say the kia is a 2003 model

They were good tugs and will cope with that weight van easily.
Ours were 2008 and 2009 models so the fuel consumption would probably be no guide. As far as I can remember the auto 2009 was thirstier than the manual 2008 but I can't recall details.

They are extremely good towcars although a bit "juicy".I used to have 2003 3.5 auto.absolutely brilliant (self levelling etc.)This was followed by a 2007 2.5 sorento which was equally good.I now have a 2.2 KX3 which has just as much grunt but more economical and cheaper road tax than my previous 2.5.Have a look at UK Sorento forum......very helpful crowd with lots of knowledge and experience with any problems/re calls etc. Fuel consumption on my early (petrol) model when towing 1400k was approx 18 mpg.The facelift 2.5 was roughly the same. Both solo about 22/24 mpg overall.

I towed with a 56 plate Sorento (same as the model you are asking about) and it was an impressive tow car with which we toured all over Europe. Ours as an auto version and I would say average towing MPG was around 20/22 mpg. We later changed to a 59 plate updated model with the more powerful engine but no SLS. Economy was no different. Enjoyed the extra power but did not think that it gave such a stable tow as those models with SLS.

My Mk2 Mondeo 1.8TD pulls my small 1100kg van with no problem, if a little underpowered. It is nearing end-of-life, and a Sorento (4-5 years old) appeals, but seems excessively large? What is the Sportage like in comparison? Local garage has a tidy Tiguan 2.0 at £6500 , but it's 2008 which seems a bit too old since I tend to keep cars to the end of their lives! Any thoughts welcome.
