im 70 in November and have received license renew forms. I drive a Toyota Lancruiser and a weighty Hymer caravan, I'd be within the limits though. However I decided to keep my options open and ask for my current driving capacity to be maintained. I have filled in a D2 form and begun the process of a D4. The optic in has charged £10 my Dr is asking for £148 to provide a medical. Are these the usual cost? I was quite surprised.

Is it worth keeping your existing entitlement, Stuart?

The over 70 licence allows you to drive a car up to 3500kg and to tow whatever is legal for that car.

If you were considering switching to a MH over 3500kg it would be a different matter.

The doctor's charge you quote doesn't surprise me at all.

    That's why I didn't bother keeping my C1.

If you are a pre 1997 driver,  you can drive up to 3500 kg,  AND tow up to 3500 kg if your vehicle train weight allows that much.

Search CMHC PDFs , this has been raised before.

I did not bother with the medical , but I can still drive our outfit  .    2100kg kerb weight car plus 1900 kg MTPLM  caravan.

Approaching 4800 Kg all up when well loaded.

I recently needed a D4 for the HGV test and if you google 'cheap d4 medicals' you should find someone who can do it for about £55. As far as I know it doesn't have to be done by your own GP (mine certainly wasn't). These D4 specialist doctors can offer it so cheaply because they queue everyone up with 20 minute appointment bookings one after the other and do loads of people in a few hours. It's a bit of a production line but you still get a proper, valid (as long as you pass!) D4 at the end of it.

The only issue is if us wrinklies want to switch to a motorhome that is over 3500Kg. which is most of the bigger ones.
