Some really interesting points there. The week before our stay on Hunters Moon, we had stayed on a farm site in Cornwall, on a grass pitch with no hook up. We have been there many times over the years and the grass has good drainage so grass isn't a problem. My point with this particular grass pitch at Hunters Moon was the size of it mainly as it was impossible to put our awning up. This pitch (113) in my view shd perhaps be a standard without awning pitch?? There are some very spacious grass pitches on the site but these were all taken and it's first come first served so that's fair enough.

It does not look smaller on the plan, but doubt that is to scale.

If it is sold as an awning pitch then it must be big enough, had one of the neighbours encroached, or had someone moved the peg?

I would have been having a word with the warden as none of the above should be happening.

What do you mean by "horizontally"?

Presumably side to side across the pitch rather than front to back?

Yes,  I was thinking that, on the site plan the pitches there look short in the normal perpendicular to the road direction.

So, when you book, you give the size of your van, it is then the warden's responsibility to ensure there will be a pitch of the booked type that is big enough  for your van, this may mean pitch allocation if there are pitches of differing sizes.

So if the OP has booked an awning pitch and correctly stated the length of the van, there should have been a pitch that would be big enough for them.

We had this happen at The Firs.  We had booked a serviced pitch and on arrival the warden told us that she had reserved a pitch for us as not all the serviced pitches were long enough to take our van..

Probably K, Depends when booked and what was available if last minute. In the site review however it is stated that two were available but that the other was shaded too much for OP.

Quote: 'Arriving at tea time, we had to choose between pitch 41 or 113. 41 was hardstanding and covered by trees and 113 was grass but too small to accommodate our awning. We don't think that 113 should be classed as a standard pitch with awning'

You would think that should be the case. However, at Cirencester all pitches are marketed as awning, although a lot of the HS's are very narrow and the car has to go across the front. A 7.3 m van like ours has to hang off the back to give room for the car. Plus with the van tight to the left of the HS, a full awning totally fills the rest of the pitch to the grass divide and guy ropes go into the grass. So yes an awning does fit, but I think more accurately they should be marketed as small, or porch awning pitches. We only have a roll out awning, so for us they are fine. However, I would imagine someone going for the first time and having a full awning would feel very cramped and somewhat dissapointed.

Having stayed at Hunters Moon site and been allocated the last available pitch No 112 which is also far too small as is pitch 113 to accommodate an awning.

The Wardens are fully aware of the complaints on all the pitches on this particular part of the site, especially pitches 112 & 113 which if you wish to use an awning on these two pitches, forget it unless you have a pistol  drill, long drill bits and rawlplugs to fix guy lines to the road surface. Then park your car in the visitors area.

Although the site plan is not to scale, the satellite image for the area is very clear.  There is not a van on 113 but it is certainly less deep than 114 and that van is right against the hedge and close to the road. It does look only suitable for a small van.

However, if there were two pitches available the OP did have the option of taking HS 41. Although having 50% tree cover, it seems a very generous size. We have certainly been advised on arrival that our van will only fit comfortably on certain numbered pitches of those left. What we choose has been left to us.

That does make a difference, I had not seen the review.  In that case I would have taken the shaded pitch.

If some pitches are so physically difficult to erect an awning on, then the OP has a point about them being sold as awning pitches!

Been to Cirencester and used one of the narrow pitches (in preference to grass), plenty of room at the rear to have the van overhang the grass so we just had the wheels + a little on the hardstand as we have a long van.    We only have a porch awning so it fitted.  That was the only way to make enough space for the car across the front, warden seemed OK with this, but it is not ideal.

Time they made all the pitches wide enough, even if it means losing a few.
