Living anywhere North of Birmingham and South of Edinburgh/Glasgow are IMO the people who are the more fortunate when it comes to taking a holiday in the UK. Just about anywhere can be reach even for a short break.

While those of us in Scotland are really restricted to, well, Scotland, despite what Tinny and others might think. The borders for us are 3 hrs drive as is the West coast of Scotland and the North coast a little further away. So for last minute short breaks we don't have the option of all the THS, or 16 out of the 17 sites that Rowena mentioned in her post. Only 1 site Brora could we reach within 3 hrs and only that if we don't get held up on the A9.

So I will stick to my guns here and say folk down South do have more of a choice when it comes to' last minute short breaks'

Tinny I appreciate that you live at the foot of England so for you everything is North, but that is your choice, you could if you so wished have the whole of Europe within your grasp.

Just how far in England could you reach in 3 hours from your home, its a long time since I lived in Devon so am not familiar now with the traveling times anymore.

Just as an aside, in just over 2 weeks time we are sailing from Plymouth to Roscoff to start our 5 weeks holiday. Our choice we could as you so rightly said spend it in Scotland, but having lived here for the last 51 years I've pretty much seen most of it and what I haven't seen I will do so when I've finished touring Europe.

When I took weekend breaks (long time ago) my wife worked for a while 3 evenings a week as a doctors' receptionist. She finished at 6pm. I would collect her straight from work with caravan and kids and so generally limited to 70 miles radius of Chester. Fair bit of choice I suppose.

Well, there you go, TG, you've admitted you can drive 3 hours or so in three directions. That was my whole point. Thanks for agreeing.

    Hi,

Thinking about a last minute trip to Stonehaven, probably in a couple of weeks. Need to check availability.

It'll only be a Friday night, back Sunday, due to work and kids school.

Stoney is about an from us

    Cheers, Alex.

You are however not taking into account the lack of site offerings as far  Club sites and CLs are concerned, which was what Rowena's post was all about!

You need to consider the whole picture.

You deviated from Rowena's topic by saying  "you lot down south have way more opportunities than we up here, Even if not using Club sites, which are few and far between up here, you have way more choice of places to visit on a whim than we do"  so you broadened it out from club sites. Now, it suits you to say I'm not taking account of there being fewer club sites in Scotland!

Come on, sauce for the goose etc!

I have indeed considered the whole picture and my broad view is that you, in Scotland (note, I'm not using the somewhat derogatory term 'you lot') have many good sites to choose from - club and numerous privately owned sites.

I think you need to reconsider your words.

I don't have much structure in my life so Last Minute Availability could be very useful particularly with CLs.  I am about to plan something for September with my daughter but it won't be club sites as she isn't a member - whereas  my membership of the other club  covers one family member - so that will be the way we go!  It will be fairly last minute too as I don't like paying deposits!

we had digressed onto structure....structure in their lives and CC site bookings, which is what drives most to use the FD window....

i don't use it, i cant (dont want to) commit to a MHing holiday (particularly a few days away in the UK) many months in advance.....they are not important and as i dont agree with the cancellation policy so i wont use it.....so i only book when its certain i will honour it......at least im not a hypocritesmile

my point was merely that the thought of me just upping sticks on a Tuesday morning (or whenever) without having thought about it for weeks on end probably feel alien to those who like ducks in a row....

incidently, the THS sites have loads of room and are mainly non-facs/ehu so wont appeal to the masses.

i am getting myself more organised (like TG we will be crossing to France soon, now looks like the 28th at the earliest) so will have a think about booking the ferry in a weeks timewink

Easy, i dont want to know in December (or January) where im going in July or September......i want it to be a surprisesmile

It's the hidden thread, Nellie. Suddenly it's possible to view all the hidden ones.

Believe me, there's nothing of interest in the hidden section - I've checked.wink

Not agreeing with you Tinny come on now wink

The point is although we can go in three direction (4 if we go East) we have covered all these many times, as both myself and Kj have pointed out.

Rowena listed 17 sites, 16 of which are not within our reach for a short break.

You still haven't answered my question, 'how far can you reach in 3 hours from your home' not forgetting the weather is usually much better down south.

BB we are off on the 31st from Plymouth, overnight ferry.

I'm afraid you did agree with me, much as it might pain you to discover that. The issue was regarding places you CAN go, not whether you WISH to go to them. It matters not how many times you've visited them before, they are still there and available to you. Do you think you are the only people who have visited the same local places again and again?

I haven't answered your red herring of a question as it depends on so many factors and has no relevance. Just look at a map and familiarise yourself with the geography of our country and you will see that you have many more square miles of country available to you than we have.

OK......how many camp sites are there in England?  How many in your local area?  As it is a holiday destination, I expect there are rather a lot of sites.

I have tried googling, one website claimed there are about 3000 sites in the whole of UK, another claimed there are 500-600 sites in Scotland.  No information given as to what type of sites those might be.

Whether that is correct I have no idea.

The area of UK is something like 242000 sq  km , of that Scotland is just over 80000 sq km, almost one third, but we do not seem to have anything like one third of the campsites.

England is slightly over 130000 sq km, less than twice the area of Scotland, pretty sure it has more than 1200 campsites.

So sites are thin on the ground up here compared to England.

Just having a read through the posts myself. Page 1 2 and 5 all fine. Pages 3 and four show 7 replies and says /hidden. Not very well me thinks 😉. This website forum hasn't really improved since the launch in December but hey ho all things take time 😉 not to mention inclination and acknowledgement of issues 😤😭.

I see some of the last minute ones listed by Rowena are normally busy sites and this is the school summer holiday period 😲😲😲. Got to be price?

We're up for' impluse' trips but not at club prices! In fact as our big trip is NZ most years we fit in what we can as often as we can and prefer lower prices as we need to consider our care home fees too 😉.

Just spent 5 days non EHU,  OH now convinced it's do-able. So it'll be C&CC non ehu pitches or CL's as club don't offer this even yet.
