Probably not as capable as an equivalent Diesel

You do know that the way they are getting SI (Petrol) engines to compare with CI engines (Diesel) is to use a forced induction system
Have a look at some websites about petrol cars that are up to the job, invariably they are a forced induction system that increases volumetric efficiency.
You cant compare a naturally aspirated petrol against an equivalent diesel , they are designed to operate under different conditions whereas newer technology, such as common rail systems a few years back. has helped Diesels narrow the gap between the Petrol v Diesel debate as has the wider application of turbo chargers for Petrol engines.
Sorry to go of topic, but if you do go for a 2L petrol I personally wouldn't even consider it if wasn't fitted with a turbo.
Happy car hunting

Don't know if you intend looking at a new Rav 4 but in the recent Towcar Awards, it was slated and described as not a very good towcar

Bugger: Ive just bought one 10 mins ago. Thinking it's bound to be better than the 1600 Grand Vitara. It's for the wife as i use a van. & just for genral running around & towing a couple or three times a year:
It'll be r8: 147 bhp. & bags of torque.

Oh right funnily enough, it is the Suzuki S-Cross that won the class

Hi, just reading comments and I think the Rav4 in the tow car award was a Hybrid. We have just had a 2016 Rav4 2.0ltr Diesel and a Bailey Vigo. Towed to Cornwall and kept at 56mph in 6th gear with no problems. Did change to 5th on hills but still had no issues.

Well i googled it, & evryone is ranting about how good they are, Even Practical Caravan so not worried in the least. It's an old 2.0 vvti i've bought. It'll be fantastic i'm sure, will let you all know next week:
It's only towing a lightweight coachman 360/2: 900 kg fully laden.
a 1300 would pull that easy.

Think I've said in another thread, but back in 2003, after being shunted just before hitching up, ended up with a RAV4 2l petrol for 3 weeks going over to France. Once we got used to it, after a 2l turbo diesel, we had no probs - and petrol engines now are much improved since then!

Glad yr happy Madmax - hope we will be too - just ordered a Subaru Forester 2l petrol, but won't be towing with it till next Spring. For now, off to pollute France for a month with our trusty Euro4 2lTD Octavia - will be sad to see it go, but decided to change while there is still some PX value left in it!
