Day stop near Portsmouth
We are travelling from Yorkshire to Portsmouth to catch the overnight ferry to France. We would like to break the journey by having the afternoon somewhere near to Portsmouth where we can
- Park our long twin axle caravan
- Grab a bite to eat
- Let the children run around
Does anyone have any suggestions where might fit the bill?

Which route are you travelling? Not sure about travelling with a caravan, but on the M27 there are services at Swanwick, or on the A3 there are possibilities to stop opposite the Queen Elisabeth park, Morrisons just off the A3(M) at Horndean or the ASDA hypermarket just off the A3(M) at Waterlooville.

No services at Swanwick. Only M27 services are at Rownhams on the way to Dorset.

Are motorway services what is being asked for? I read it as local knowledge eg here I'd suggest local estate lots of free parking enough for car and csravan and no restrictions, but onky seen motorhomes before, good walks children's play area and even cafe if you wanted it 😉. Sorry it's nowhere near Portsmouth. Is there something along the lines of say clumber park locally? What about an overnight stop for before ferry?

No ones mentioned this place yet so I will,
Port Solent which is an out of town shopping centre near Portsmouth and the Ferry Port, we always stop there for the late evening ferry plenty of parking and a Weatherspoons for a cheap evening meal with a pint what's not to like. There numerous other place's to eat also.

If coming down the A34 there's the service area at Sutton Scotney, it's about 50 odd miles from Portsmouth, the last easy place to get petrol before you hit the M3 and M27 and has a huge car park, has somewhere to eat and not too bad all in all for a break. We've used it a number of times coming down from the north west.

I would second Phillnffc's recommendation. Just be aware that there are a couple of vicious sleeping policemen just before you get to the car parks. Port Solent is actually a marina, not an out of town shopping centre. Mostly bars/restaurants with a few 'poncy' shops.

Have a look at Southsea Common, there's a lot of on road parking along the beach. Go right to the far end passing the pier then turn round at the end to face back towards the town. I've parked there twice over the years when waiting for friends to meet up.

Thank you. Lots of good ideas. May well give Port Solent a go. I don't know why I hadn't thought O'S Southsea common I used to spend lots of time there as a child!😊
