How to thrive on a non 240v site!

Boff, you're 100% correct but on who's recommendation we're the CL owners encouraged to install expensive EHU? If our off grid activities were marketed in the same way as the club champions their club sites then the whole SP mindset would begin to sway in our favour. All we are doing is helping to save the earths resources for future generations and to save money to boot. What is there not to like about that?
I will gladly share my excel spreadsheet with anyone who emails me at
I created it back in June so it won't be up to date due to some CL site installing EHU. Now there's irony.

Looks like we are just going to agree to agree Kevlon . In the olden days a CL consisted of a field which may or may not have been also occupied by sheep, a tap and somewhere to dump your Elsan. Point is with that set up there is almost no capital investment. A van turns up its almost all profit.
Today with EHU's and god forbid hardstanding service pitches there is a lot of money tied up before you have a single visitor. The chances of the Club championing anything are slim to non existent. They see it as an eccentric thing to do by eccentric people.
The title of this thread kind of gives the game away with regards to most people's attitude if the title could be changed from "How to survive a non 240v EHU site" to "How to thrive on a non 240v EHU site" . Then we would be getting somewhere. As you have discovered it's not exactly rocket science it is just a question of taking that first step
The club could promote non EHU. They are influential it's called thought leadership. Qualities that don't seemed to be present in abundant quantities at the moment.

Have seen on another forum that Morrisons have issued a blanket ban on allowing LPG fill up to motorhomes and caravans. It appears this was done at the advice of Calor. Anyone on here heard anything about it, or is it just another 'story'

I think I can throw some light on this Tammy. Calor and Flogas hate Safefill. Ever since it's inception , they have tried to kill it off by every trick in the book. False information was spread around about Safefill, they were quoting from the famous Sheet 26 which deals with the refilling of Cylinders , I have personal proof that they have 'leaned' on their franchisees not to fill them. Unfortunately for Calor and Flo, Safefill is a far too good a product to be smothered by subterfuge and deception. Safefill has now reached the status of being included in the 'red guide' which is the bible for the forecourts. Sheet 26 is being rewritten- again to include properly constructed cylinders (Safefill) for filling. This is monumental as , since the invention of cylinder gas, nothing like this has ever happened. Well, it's happened now and Safefill have challenged the big boys and after a 6 or 7 year fight, have won through. There is now absolutely no reason why Safefill cannot be filled Nationwide. Petrol Heads, the forecourts magazine has an article in it about this and is being sent to every forecourt in the land. I have written to Morrisons and Shell and am waiting replies from them both. I think you will find that the 'ban' is for the muppets that try to fill rented steel cylinders- and that should stay in place! Morrisons have the new info which I sent them and are speaking with the relevant people whatever that means but I can't see, after all the safety features etc have been accepted by the relevant authorities that Morrisons will stand and still refuse to fill them- they are a business after all!

I like that Boff- well said. When big business supports big business, new ideas get snuffed out very quickly. Calor is a huge sponser of the Club- do we think for one minute that the club is going to start shouting about Safefill??? Of course not. Are they going to promote Offgrid ?? I really don't think so. It's only because of people like me and others who have come on here and told people that there is a new way of caravanning that others have found out about it, tried it by having faith and found that their costs for caravanning have plummeted! Is the club going to promote something that earns them much less- haa haa ha ha haa!!! I've asked the club twice to run a full article on non EHU caravanning using my van as a model. I've been promised twice that they will be in touch. Have they?? Pigs might fly. I know I have sounded like an old cracked record with the same message over and over again and I've 'bored' some but I have also had caravanners contact me by email to say that they have been keeping up with the thread and they made the decision to go non EHU , have fitted the kit and to a man, everyone who has done it has been 100% convinced that it was the right thing to do, have saved oodles and have thanked me. The club doesn't want Solar panels, Safefill or anything else that will take money away from them. I don't think they have to worry- the status quo rules supreme for most. - but boy, they are missing out.

RE: Morrisons....
AFAIK, there were two threads on MMM....one was questioning that Morrisons might be withdrawing their LPG services....
running almost in parallel was a second thread that confirmed that Morrisons had been asked about this policy and they confirmed that they would be continuing with the LPG service and that all outlets were notified of this.
so, my recollection is that Morrisons WILL dispense LPG....and this was a cpuple of weeks prior to Merves news of the 'acceptance' of Safefill by the industry....

Thanks Guys(Merve & BB) knew you wouldn't let me down
I knew there had been issues but thought they were now resolved, we've not had the need to refill since coming back from abroad. However there was a fair few postings about Morrisons on FB so thought it best to find out. Many thanks.

The lack of conversions of cars to gas will I'm sure (and has) led garages etc to finish their gas supply. BP being the most prominent. However, those who have held on to their gas supply units may find, and I really hope they do, a new revenue stream in Safefill and Gaslow etc. And this is a valid point- The more people that buy Safefill cylinders the more likely it is that these outlets will keep going as we fill our cylinders!!. Again, if we want this service, then buy a cylinder! There is a revolution going on in the cylinder market at the moment and it has happened not a moment too soon. The fact that folk can own their own cylinders means that Calor and co will lose out on their rental charges and of course this has been at the bottom of all the fighting, lies and deception surrounding the entry into the market place of Safefill. However, it's only the the 6kg market- Calor and co still hold sway over the larger cylinders. I have asked Safefill if they ever envisage having a 19 or even a 47kg cylinder produced. The answer was no. I wonder if their decision has been influenced by the wrestling that they have experienced trying to break through the wall of legal and not so legal challenges with their 6kg replacement cylinders?

Merve I have taken the liberty of reporting your post in case it's missed by moderators. I hope you don't mind.
I think the title change would entice more people to read it.
If it doesn't get changed maybe you (as you really seem to be the CT champion for independence of EHU 😉) could start a new thread with a title that might entice others to read and consider. You can put in a link to this thread and maybe condense the points too, to make it a quicker read 😉.

All we need now is for some MH manufacturers to fit sensible sized gas lockers and hatches to match. Some of the MH's I have looked at during my research clearly don't envisage anything bigger than a single 6Kg Calorlite and even that needs a shoe horn.

Good idea bakers. No problem. EJB may well be right but it surprises me- I would have thought they could have- they can change to lower case from upper case so I thought they well be able to do it- can a moderator confirm or not please- that would be most useful!

Oh I so agree Cyber! Again, they don't seem to know what the leisure industry is up to! And while they are about it, a decent sized panel - say 150w, decent batteries and a decent size inverter- say PSW 1500w - yes, that should do nicely for a start. When are the manufacturers going to catch up with the cutting edge of technology and what we can do with our Caravans now! - they always seem to be about 5 yrs behind the times! I see they are lauding the supply of a 100w SP- they were doing that 2 or 3 yrs ago! If a caravan manufacturer had the foresight to produce a caravan that could be used as easily off grid as it could on grid (l have one!) then how many of us would say "stuff high prices! I'm off grid"? USB leads and sockets are just appearing. How long has USB been out? Are the big clubs, and caravan and Motorhome manufacturers in league with each other I ask myself? Why would a ring on the cooker be changed to an electric plate? Have customers asked for it? Perhaps they have, but why you would I can't imagine having Safefill at hand. I have written to Bailey and explained the new regs surrounding Safefill and suggested they provide a free Safefill cylinder with every new van sold! I still say that Safefill will, in a few years, go from being an oddity to the accepted and go to cylinder for Caravans . But it needs vision from the people who are supposed to have vision- the clubs, the manufacturers etc nearly all of whom seem to be stuck in the past.

In 47kg cylinders propane works out at £0.56p /litre, delivered free, so not quite the same incentive.

With the club buying their gas from Calor for something around 20p a litre I suppose they think it important to play ball. I am reliably informed a local chicken unit pays that and Calor offered me log @ 21.5p a litre to fill my Central Heating. I declined! But pay that to another smaller company!
Hmmmph I suggested the Thrive title way back when Merve restarted this thread!
