I cannot get my fridge to cool when on tow, My auto electrician has checked the output to the Caravan socket  and proved to me there is voltage and current when the engine is running. United British Caravans my dealer assures me that after  testing the circuit to the fridge is sound and working, But I have no cooling on the Fridge, it works on Gas and 240v  but not on tow HELP!

    Hi

i checked and note you have a dometic fridge in that caravan.

i have had problems with my new dometic fridge freezer not cooling very quick (days) and warming up while towing on 12 volt.

My dealer checked and with engine running and fridge on 12 volt it was pulling 12 amp (a lot of current apparently) which suggested it was working.

I wonder if you are experiencing a similar problem?

I think we have the same fridge and it works fine. Sometimes to fine and the milk and salad ends up frozen.  To be fair to the fridge if you load it full of food and drink at room temperature it is going to take time to cool.

Regarding gas. I think that the initial smell is paint and oils burning off. Just like the smell of a new painted exhaust. On gas it shouldn't really produce carbon monoxide if it does then something is wrong it will produce carbon dioxide but put it into perspective it is only a small amount into a drafty awning compared to the amount produced if you have the cooker in the van working.

Our fridge freezer works fine. of course we do run it on EHU for about a week before traveling on three bars and you have to remember that being hooked up to the car only gives you a nominal temperature and not a full setting as in EHU or gas. I presume that you switched over to the car setting ?

There have been problems with the control panel too

    Two things

1    If it is the Dometic tall fridge 9000 series there is a known fault that causes some to over cool and it is rectified by a Dometic trained service engineer ,by changing the gas valve that "sticks" and it effects the thermostat, when on EHU,ours has been done as have several others that i know about,

2   The non working on 12v when towing is also a known "problem" that is caused by the "intelligent" alternators on some modern cars, which will not supply enough power to the caravan supply when it senses that the car electrics do not need power (the prime user)it can be overcome by fooling the alternator into fully working by driving with dipped headlights, when checked as the car has usually just been started the starter battery is calling for charge which the alternator is then giving more power

We have the same 'tall' fridge and have not experienced these problems as far as I can tell - the fridge works fine onsite and maintains coolness when we travel once it has been initially cooled on electric.
