Silverbank Banchory

Our friends and ourselves both booked 7 nights here last week.  We got a pitch each with another in between.  This couple always sat at their front window and had no rear window.  After going to our friends caravan about 3 times behind their van with our grand daughter.  Out comes the husband saying,  could you please stop going behind our van this is our pitch our area, this is just not cricket.  Well I politely accepted this.

we were sitting in our friends awning one night about 11.10 at night having a game of old maid having a laugh.  Suddenly a torch shines into the awning and a voice from the warden, could you keep the noise down.  We were very quiet and laughing.  Walking about the camp on egg shells is not my idea of relaxing and chilling for a week.  There was no mention of the rumbling about of people early morning.  And his military precise time of starting the tractor at 9am.  A smile would also have been nice.  I spoke to people who had been going for years and they even said it used to be a great laught here also with the wardens.  Not now.

I am now seriously thinking of not renewing my club membership if this is what you get.  Also I won't be back to silverbank in a hurry.

Thank you.

When you say you went behind their van is there a big expanse of green behind them or a narrow stretch of grass backed by a hedge/fence? If it's the latter I think it would be considered a bit discourteous the exception perhaps is to reach an electrics bollard with your cable. Noise is always a difficult one and a group of 4/6 people can become more animated than you realise. A lot of people seem to be in bed by 11.00pm if you are a light sleeper that sort of chatter can be annoying. I think lots of non Club sites have similar rules.

It would be Old Maid on a Club site, wouldn't it?!  Not Black Jack or Poker. tongue-out

We used to play it with friends, try taking the Old Maid out to up the odds and annoy everyone. Seriously, there are certain rules, but your pursuits are innocent.

I had a friend (in the old days) who was suspended from her uni study course, found with a boy in her room after 11pm....even worse, they were sitting on the floor eating Angel Delight. Slapped wrists all round.

Hope you aren't put off, we are going to Banchory later in the year. Sadly our friends are not around to join in any more merry card games. Hope you can continue to enjoy your get togethers. wink

In the middle, the pitches have a huge expanse of grass behind, but the pitches round the perimiter have less grass and then hedge or trees.

So depends which pitches OP and friends were on

I would not walk behind the perimiter pitches other than to access the bollard, but people walk in the central area all the time.  If walking there, I would keep a good distance from another pitch.

But really, wherever pitched, I would use the road if going 2 pitches along.

We have used the site several times, we found there were a lot of campers who seemed to be regulars and knew each other, so there were several gatherings of, mainly, wrinklies who became louder the more wine they had consumed!

A couple of groups did seem to go on rather late, one lot still sitting outside gone midnight, but we are not early to bed, so it did not really bother us.

"Having a laugh in a canvas awning at 11.10pm"

Eggshells after 11pm is perfectly reasonable surly?

'Surly' was a typo and should read 'Surely'

Apologies if any unintended offence was given.

I'm just back from Banchory, and as usual people take a short cut across middle grass. Not really a big issue, even for me with rear lounge. Wardens are - I found - helpful and hardworking. The site can be a bit cliquey tho', but this year was very quiet at night. I do agree about early morning toilet emptiers!

A full toilet requires immediate action!  Ours always seems to need emptied either first thing or last thing.

I do however try to either carry it or wheel it on grass as far as possible.

I'm sure you will enjoy it Brue, its a very nice site.

Wardens come and go so I wouldn't let that put me off going to a site, as others have said walking behind/across/in front of someone's van is something folk come on here and complain about, definitely a no no. Knowing that site I would agree with KJ if it was on the perimeter then no there is no need or reason to walk behind a van.

Noise in an awning is very annoying late at night and 11pm is late for some folk.

11 pm late ?  While the next night there was noise and not a word said.

So I would have been better walking past his front window where his tow hitch was about 2 foot from the road, is that not worse.  Also walk all the way round the road to the toilet, come on.  I was told it was cliquey before I went and they weren't wrong.

If you have kids its not the place for you or if your under 65.

I will have to wait until September to visit then.😉 However seriously though, there is nothing ageist about being considerate towards others. A standard 7am to 10pm quiet time with no movement of vehicles during this time, ( ferry sites/ pitches excepted) should be a clearly stated policy. Nothing stopping you playing cards until the early hours, just do it with less volume, or perhaps retire inside at 10pm.

Might see you there in September. Sometimes it is the way things are handled that give cause for complaint. Obviously we all try to respect the rules on site. smile

I don't think it is a case of respecting rules Brue. Simply a case of respecting others. I can't join you all on this site until early November.

Empty the toilet before its FULL.

Respect for others is fine but come on there is a fine line between enjoying yourselves and putting the dampers on it and laughing and making a din. 10 pm inside.  Its holiday not detention  I think consideration and respect is required both parties.  As I said before very cliquey and not for me.

We have been to Silverbank a few times. Always found it to be a friendly well run site.

Would I go back ? - Most definitely.

Been many times over the last 20 years, with child, no problem.

People were friendly, stopped to chat.  Yes, many knew each other of those that arrived for the weekend, but that did not stop them talking to us.

Site road is for everyone, if a camper chooses to pitch their van close to the road, they cannot expect others to give them a wide berth just because of that.

IMO, because of the layout at Silverbank, it is OK to cross the central grass ( Club should have thought about this and made a footpath) BUT, there are wide grass bits between the hardstands and I would always walk down the middle of one of those.  Nobody should complain about that.  The hardstands are also very big, so vans are well apart.

Just how close behind this van did you walk?

Better not go to Germany or Austria, and probably a few other places abroad if you want to make noise late at night!  Many sites expect silence between 11pm and 7am, and will ask you to leave if you are too noisy.

When we are in the van watching TV or playing music at night, we always go outside to check that our noise cannot be heard by people in adjacent vans.

if you were disturbed late on by others, did you go and ask them to keep the noise down?  Or mention it to the warden?  The rule is the same for everyone, but if nobody complains, or the warden is not aware, nothing will happen.

tow hitch was about 2 foot from the road, is that not worse.

Worse than what?  Two foot clearance from road to hitch seems perfectly normal and is what happens on many sites, including those that are not Caravanning Club sites.

Also walk all the way round the road to the toilet, come on.

Indeed.  That's why there is a roadway for all to use.

Perhaps as members we could instigate some sort of sign that could be displayed on a caravan so that others using the site would know that the occupants welcomed people passing within a few inches of their outfit.

It was said as a bit of a joke.

I will empty before bedtime if it is nearing full, and always try to do it quietly.  My "first thing" is likely nearer 9 than 7, so the sound of the warden's tractor will drown out the wastemaster and/or toilet wheels noise!

A clique is a group of individuals who interact with one another and share similar interests.

So thats all of us caravanners then!

The OP said 'I am now seriously thinking of not renewing my club membership if this is what you get.  Also I won't be back to silverbank in a hurry. Thank you.'

Is nobody going to try and persuade him to renew his membership?
