Actually the Meeks gave up as do most people who think they can spend the rest of their lives in a van. Reading the blogs that people create, they start with enthusiasm and unfortunately, just as in real life problems occur. Enjoy it while you can but be realistic. Even many "travellers" have permanent homes somewhere.

By the way that's not advice, that's common sense. tongue-out

Hello Poppy, have you had a look at the solos section in the discussions area, you'll find some friendly ideas on there and hopefully some meets where you can find some friends for chats (and pets too!) Best wishes, hope you can enjoy lots more motorhome adventures. Let us know how you get on. smile

    It appears notwink

I think you would stand a better chance by posting your request in the Solo Caravanning and Touring section, maybe?

    Anyway....back to today....

This morning we have organised our car to be serviced before our next trip away, and DD's car to be serviced the same week, both with pick up and delivery.

Plus we have arranged to take the caravan to Truma, near Derby, at the beginning of our September trip, thus saving the hassle of taking it to our dealer ....good suggestion Malcolm!

They had plenty of service vacancies that week, so we had a choice of dates.

Now need to get OH to rearrange our trip we just booked on Friday......just as well the Club allows that without hassle or penalty!

Also working on the oven housing, needs a good clean inside, plus a few repairs, before I can think about where the new oven support shelf needs to go, and how I am going to support it.

First, while it is sunny outside, I am going to fit the 2 new outside lights we bought recently.

OH is doing laundry to use the solar power.

Mmm, I don't think it's the Isle of Wight in the distance......laughing

Could it be Capri on the horizon? Happy to be wrong. wink

I've been without WiFi for the past 48 hours. Anything vital on the last half dozen page or so that I need to read carefully or should lose sleep over? wink

I've been down the storage area this afternoon to give the van a fettle ready for our next trip this weekend. I started in sunshine which soon deteriorated into heavy showers. I fished out an old waterproof jacket that I keep in the car boot and soldiered on.

The van is supposedly washed when its serviced but they can't have done the roof it was filthy. Anyhoo a good two hours later and it was spotless but I didn't bother drying it off as it was raining again as I finished.

I borrowed the storage yard's long hose and put it away tidy after but having turned the tap off I disconnected it and got drenched, it's a long pipe and there must have been pressure in the hose.😱

That surprises me. I thought the Meeks were happy with their way of life of getting out of the rat race. Do you mean they've gone back to their old jobs, children back in school and buying property once again? Aren't they missing all that freedom, lower cost of living and having time to spend together as a family which is what made them embrace such a lifestyle in the first place?

We are just home from a lovely 2 and a half weeks down at Hillhead CC in Devon the weather was mostly good with a few really warm days. As usual Hillhead was brilliant abd they even have Lesley Presley back who was entertaining as always. We left Hillhead yesterday and spent last night at Blackpool South CC which was surprisingly empty. We had an uneventful drive home today. Going to cheer myself up by booking a long weekend at Berwick for September. We will hopefully get a few weekends away before that but its back to the grind for now lol

Good (or so called common) sense I would have thought!

It is a fine life for a few years, but children need to mix with their peers and have some structure to their education if they are to progress in education.

Were the parents not teachers?  They would need to progress their careers before too long, plus what were they living on?

A reasonable teacher would be on at least £35k, so £70k for a couple, a lot to pass up on!

Did they sell their house?  They would not want to be off the "housing ladder" too long if they did.

Malcolm.....for you to live like this when you are at least getting a pension, and could claim benefits, and have no children to support is one thing, but for a couple with 2 children to look after, it is a totally different matter.

One thing I do not understand in life is why anyone thinks a normal 9-5 job means parents cannot spend time with their children.?

For most of my working life I had anything but a normal 9-5 job, being on call all hours and often working on weekends, but I still made time for our children, and OH was a full time mum and carer for her mum, so always home.

We always had family holidays, and did things like swimming, going places together, and just spending time together at home, reading books, playing games etc.

We did make decisions that put family first.  I worked for an international company, so could have worked all over the world, but decided this was not in the interests of our children.  My brother moved around a lot, and I could see how unsettling it was for his children, and detrimental to their education, so decided to forego promotion in the interests of our children.  They are both well adjusted adults now, high achievers, so I feel I made the right decision.

Yes but they weren't happy with their previous way of life and gave it up for the caravanning life. So how will they manage to go back to a way of life that previously didn't suit them? Also their children will have got used to the new way of life, so difficult for them to go back to the old ways too, surely?

Amended September trip now booked by OH, some sites the same as before, but now an anti-clockwise route instead of clockwise.

Both new lights up and tested, just waiting for a Toolstation delivery tomorrow which will include LED lamps to fit them. Some rain, but did not get too wet.

Tomorrow I need to move the caravan so we can more easily get access round the house.....SIL is coming to help me carry the new sleepers up to the top of the garden, and on Wednesday JL are delivering our new oven.

Know how you feel Millie but at least I have a stunning view from the van windows.  The MM saga is like an everlasting nightmare.  I really enjoy reading what people are really up to in their daily or vanning life.  You only have to look at the number of interesting folk who used to post on this thread to understand how far downhill it's gone.

I'm getting sorted for a visit from my cousin and a trip to a steam rally which is always a highlight of the year.

No - I'm not a great fan of steam but there's tat stalls and a food market and a shoe stall.

We cannot have everything in life, there are always compromises to be made, you would need to ask them why!

I can merely speculate and offer some suggestions.

People can also change their minds once they have tried something different.......the grass is not always greener .......etc etc.
