As is always the case the "devil is in the detail" and when looking at other than the headline grab,it will not be a ban on all diesel and petrol engines as hybrids will available and all the millions of "normal" internal combustion engined vehicles will still be sold up to that date(bargains!!) and will the around for years after untill they are "life expired"

Sodium is a chemical element. It is a soft, silvery-white, highly reactive metal.
The free metal does not occur in nature, but must be prepared from compounds. Sodium spontaneously explodes in the presence of water or other oxidising agents.
....it is NOT salt.
Just saying!

I would say that in the broad sweep of things we will find that caravans are not important to the law-makers, either as a hobby or holiday accomodation, and the size of the UK manufacturing industry will not important either. However, there would continue to be many more uses for towed trailers and so the law will accommodate suitable tow vehicles somehow. But I think by then we will have much less choice in terms of the vehicles we buy. Plus, as we move towards self-driving cars, many people will become de-skilled from being able to drive - perhaps properly driving road vehicles will be a very specialist skill for just a few people in industry and of course the military.
Perhaps, the future of caravans will be along the lines of lightweight mini-pods - a few of which we see now, and which could feasibly be towed by an electric car.

Thought this may be of interest. May be a way of powering larger vehicles in the future. Apologies - don’t know how to make the link live.

If you want more engrossing comments than the rather lightweight ones here which seem to be mostly " I'll be dead and gone, or nearly!, by then, so who cares?" try visiting the Practical Caravan forum here

Perhaps some caravaners are more practical than others!

Having just bought a hybrid car which has the back up of a tiny amount of fuel that recharges the battery, I'd say the technology is here now. The strangest thing is looking under the bonnet and seeing no engine, just windscreen washer and brake fluid!

Towing caravans on UK roads is already gradually becoming an antisocial activity and will have started to die out well before 2040.
Large Motorhomes will follow suit except for the very rich.
The future for people wishing to have touring holidays is in the use of compact motorhomes powered by electricity.
The future is looking good.

A vision for the future may be the electric weekender vans like that being built by VW and soon to be released. These we will use to go on tours between sites visited when required to recharge and refresh whilst staying overnight in 'pods' or in our vans. Sounds very similar to today!
Or, hire an edub like these right now!
