Whilst I'm sitting in the awning, posting on here, the warden is mowing the lawn outside and I'm thinking how much nicer this is, than in the days when I owned a house and had to spend every weekend going up and down the lawn with the lawn mower myself. Now I can relax in the awning and watch all this being done for me whilst still enjoying a lush green, freshly mown lawn, outside my awning window!

You reckoned in an earlier post to allow 45 pence per mile for car running costs

That is a little different as that figure takes into account the cost of running a car for an average mileage. Presumably takes account of servicing, insurance, depreciation etc. to provide a vehicle for an employer. Given that you have to own and insure the car and that your mileage is such that you have an annual service anyway it is not the true cost of individual trips.

Changed my car insure for renewal. Last year the 11 year old 2.2 X-Trail cost us £192 to insure including some add ons. The 17 year old 1000cc Yaris was £191 with same add ons. OH main driver of Yaris and me of X-Trail. Both good history.

That was via RAC. This years quote was £244 for X-Trail and £210 for Yaris.

Decided to go with Saga for X-Trail at £183. Was not going to bother to change Yaris but out of interest got a quote from Saga. £290. Go figure as they say?

Sadly it's considered normal many cases! I wonder how they'd squeal if the interest rate goes up. Even a doubling of current rates won't be anything like most of us had to endure on mortgages at 17%. Granted then the amount loaned was pegged at twice joint or 3 times a single salary but still hard to find.

The debt level in this country is frightening even those in power. But they don't know how to solve it such is the level or unsecured debt 😲

These days it's only fools, include me in that,  that save 😉

    Mustn't get political 😇

Edit wow loads of posts means this is sort of hanging and unrelated 😭😂

That seems to be the philosophy of youngsters these days and then one wonders how the huge financial debt bubbles are built up that are going to explode soon

I think your maths is a little flawed, as ET said!

The 45ppm is not what your car costs to run actually, it is what HMRC allow you to receive tax free if you use your car for business.  Your costs per mile could be higher or lower than that, probably lower.

Plus of course, the travel to and from work is a private cost anyway.

Yes you will not be putting as many miles on the car, but you cannot say you are saving money that you are not actually spending, if you see what I mean.  I don't think I am explaining it very well.

Your actual saving at this point will be only the difference in fuel costs, say 10 miles per working day.  Work out your MPG and then the saving.

Mine are cut once a fortnight during growing season. I pay! Used to be just whilst we were away on holiday but for the last few years I get the men in as I find that I am less able. Sad innit. Still manage the shrubs and trees though.

If the fuel is around £5.50 a gallon and Malc does 40 mpg with stop start short trips then 10 miles less per day is about £1.38 saving.

I agree with you, but the problem is that any tightening of the loan market would have equally serious implications on the counties finances so I expect it's a case of dammed if they do and dammed if they don't. I expect most of us remember when the minimum repayment on any outstanding credit card debt was much higher than it is now. Perhaps a simple answer would be to increase the minimum payments to those past levels?

I am not a good one to talk because I am buying a car on an interest free loan and Margaret is doing the same on a suite of furniture. Perhaps the difference is that we do have both amounts more than covered by savings so I don't count it as debt!!!!

I just had a phone call from work. They said it has been very quiet there today and so would I like to have a day off today as there's nothing to do! So I agreed. So I now have 3 days off instead of two!

Have got our lawns done ,Madam has been out for second 2mile walk and met several of her new friends, she is now off her lead for nearly the whole time except when crossing one bus route road , otherwise she will "wait" and sit until told to "over" on the "quiet" roads,   she is really settling in to her new area, and always makes sure we are "in site" if "investigating"anything,,and one sound she does not like is Shotguns and will come strait back to us if anyone is shooting in the woods or farmland,

Well the good news is that I'll be saving money on todays commute. The bad news is that I'll get £30 less pay!

As far as spending on credit is concerned, I find that things balance out eventually. There are times when a large spend is necessary such as when the car insurance renewal is due but that is balanced by a lower spend at other times.

"interest free loans" are ok but a better price can normally be "negotiated" wink

OH calls it the "Entitled" or "Must Have" generation.

Many youngsters today think they should have all their parents have, and more, but forget that the parents have taken many years to get to this position!

Thankful that ours are more sensible.

Our daughter and her husband are planning to start a family soon, which will inevitably  mean her being off work for a while.  To prepare for this, and in case interest rates go up, she has been overpaying her mortgage (it is only her mortgage as she bought the house before they were married), and saving as much as possible too.

Her husband is rather less financially savvy, but she is trying to educate him and encourage him to save more too.  He does give her money for half the bills and the mortgage payment, so she has put him on the deeds as a part owner now, though the mortgage is only in her name.

It's too late in the day now to make any plans for an outing and after four evenings at work,  I'm feeling too tired anyway. So I think we'll just spend the evening here and chill out! If I'm lucky, I might even get to see a lovely sunset!

Personally I call interest free credit sensible, however low the interest rate on your savings.  It's the only way we've ever borrowed 😆.

I once incurred interest charges on a credit card, by mistake I'd not paid it off on time but a few days late took 3 months to clear it off 😲😲. DD from then on!

Yes it is a case of damned if they do damned if they don't, it's been allowed to get way out of control. Yes upping the minimum payment and cutting 0% transfers might help. Both those are good if you can be a card or rate tart and play them at their own game 😂😇. It takes time send you need to be on the ball 😉

I agree with the comments about getting the price down for a new purchase, especially a car where depreciation is so large. You are borrowing and paying back money on a loss.

Also the debt reduces more each month because of no interest charge.

OH calls it the "Entitled" or "Must Have" generation.

Many youngsters today think they should have all their parents have, and more, but forget that the parents have taken many years to get to this position!

a friend had to empty her mothers house a few years ago, she offered an almost brand new fridge to a colleague who was just starting out. Response - what colour? Oh I want silver not white. I'd have jumped at her offer when in the same position years ago.

Fortunately neither of our children are of the have now pay later sort, son in law might try but daughter much more money savvy and doesn't allow 😉 . Future daughter in law quite happy to have family pieces etc. Maybe they learn from what they see around them family wise? We have always explained money facts to them and they were asked to contribute to the housekeeping when they earned. Luckily we were in a position to save it for them. Daughter's is still in tact, son's helped towards an intern year. Neither of them knew about it until they were at least 25 😉.
