Whitewater and satnav
Yes the official policy is to use the directions in the handbook to sites and not rely on your satnav. This is especially important for this site particularly when approaching from the north along the A19. Chances are your satnav will try to take you to the old portrack entrance near the supermarket and you will be in a real mess. Essential you use A66 and follow the instructions/signs for Tees Barage.

I agree you should never rely on Sat Nav unless you have reviewed the route it has picked. I would always check it conforms to that recommended in the site info and if not manually adjust it. It is also worth checking the final approach on Streetview, particularly when the site is in a town, where being in the correct lane is an advantage.😂

The instructions in the site guides/website are the best as (I assume) they have been tried and tested by humans from the club. From personal experience its is really really the best thing to follow them and not your sat nav (still wake up thinking about the time we didn't follow them going to the Warwick site and ended up reversing in Sainsburys' car park)

Normally I would agreed, however having followed the clubs instructions to Abbey Wood last week, I would disagree. The suggested route is very long winded and added about 2 miles onto the route, not to mention dragging the outfit through narrow residential streets complete with traffic calming measures. There was a much simpler route which could be used and if we visited again would use.
We could see the reasoning behind the directions (very sharp right turn into Federation Road), however it would still have been easier to go down the Knee Hill, go around the roundabout and come back up hill to turn left.

Just read your post to OH, he totally agrees with you. the first time we went to Abbey Wood like you we followed the directions of the club, since then we have done as you suggested and its much better.
White Water Park is definitely one not to follow satnav though the OP is right about that, just follow the signs for the Teesdie Barrage.

Out of interest do you think that directions are reviewed before a new site book is issued? If they were surely this sort of traffic calming measure and narrow streets would be known about and noted? Or amended as necessary. Or is it the case of they are left unchanged from when the site was opened?I know what I reckon 😉

Similarly we did at that once in France, almost at destination too. Sat navigation said turn right we were so close we thought must be OK. Whoops very low bridge, had pressed to cycle under let alone get motorhome under 😲. Luckily OH did many point turn and we discovered reason for the bridge was the road we should have been on going over it!
Lesson learnt we read reread and then check nearer destination.

We slavishly follow the Sat Nav but our eyes, amazing things, tend to override it on very rare occasions.
Perhaps three times in many years and many countries. We do research locations most of the time.
One was actually a CC site Balbernie Park....when we didn't check the directions in the 2016 CC book.
Why they couldn't change the Lat and Long in the 2017/18 is presumably because it's on the IT 'Ignore' list

I have used the official instructions to get to Abbey Wood but tend to agree with Moonstone. The last time we went I left the M25 at junction 1A and used the A206 in the direction of Erith and Thamesmead and left the A2016 onto the A2041 this then a direct route to Knee Hill. Didn't have any difficulty with the right turn into Federation Road. When I spoke to the warden about this route he agreed that it was a good way to the site but their problem is that the local authorities will only allow them to use one set of route signs. My route is OK at weekends but can be busy during the week. Also the exit back onto the M25 going north is not generous in terms of slip road.
We also use our sat nav to find Club sites but we always have the handbook with us as and if in doubt use the handbook for the final half mile or so. On my TomTom I do have a facility to view the destination which is also another check on whether I am on the correct route.
