Hi all, as subject really.

I have had VW pasts for the last 6 years (company car), one being a 130ps estate and the recent a 140ps GT estate, which they both towed fine, and the latter a lot nicer as the gearing is different.

Due to my work situation changing I will no longer have use of the vehicle, so am looking for something around £7000 that will tow nicely, but also be reliable and good for daily use and ideally  not much older the 5 years or so.

Also trade sale as well if possible.

so looking at possibly mondeos, older passats but the Hyundai Santa Fe seems to get rave reviews everywhere, with the bonus of it being 4x4 and even older models being completely reliable. not fussed on fuel, but prefer diesel, manual is fine and normally tow with the awning.etc in the back or on the seats so must have some boot space (I know some 4x4 have barely enough to fit a handbag!)

So any suggestions? VW passats are slightly more from dealers, fords are cheaper (and quite liked my old mondeo),

I think for what you want to pay you may struggle? Have you considered a Land Rover Freelander 2, they can tow 2 tons, have a noseweight of 150kgs and the Td4's  are 150 bhp.

You'll find an older one for that money, just make  sure you look for one with a good service history if you consider one.

Also look for an XS or HSE, they are have a much better standard equipment and trim level.

Although the boot is not massive, a Kuga fits the job description.

Have you thought of a Korean 4x4 such as a Ssang Yong Korando or its older brother the Kyron. Both are capable of towing 2 tons and are reasonably priced. Also reliable with plenty of leg and boot space.

Have a look around for a Skoda Octavia Estate 2.0TDi 4x4, mine is the 2012 model. They have the 140 (138bhp) engine and the Haldex system gives that extra grip when needed; best of both, good load space and traction. You say you need to pull 1360kg, my van is 1318kg (88% ratio) and the car pulls it well with no effort.

I beg to differ. The new Shape Korando is a good looking car . Tows well and decent fuel economy
