Rm212 fridge questions

Hi

I've recently picked up the above fridge, and it didn't have a mains lead installed. 

I have wired one in with a 3 pin plug, but there was no colour coding or indication which way round the live a day neutral went. I've wired it so the live goes off to the thermostat, and the neutral goes down the back of the fridge. Is this correct?

    Incidentally the fridge works fine on gas but does not work on mains. It does seem to get warm round the back on mains though. 

    I have a new 240volt element to try, but as it gets warm I doubt this will fix it.

    That's great thanks. It appears I've wired mine correctly. 

    Any suggestions as to the lack of cooling on mains? Is it worth changing the element despite it appearing to get warm? Also suppose as it cools fine on gas the 'turn it upside-down' trick won't do anything?

    No ideas as to why it won't work. I have had fridges not work when air temperatures are very low and have had to heat caravan first, not in summer though. Presumably you left the fridge on for a lengthy trial.

    Yes, left it on overnight, made sure it was level etc

    I'll try the new element and see how I get on

    I've no knowledge of fridge circuitry but I spent many years with an electrical equipment manufacturer. The safety requirement then was that the incoming 'Live' (of the mains lead) should first go to the on/off switch so that when the equipment was switched off the chassis/casing etc was isolated from mains power. This would not be the case if it was the Neutral wire that was switched.

    I  should've said in my post above (but I was too late to edit it) that if the Neutral is switched instead of the 'Live' the chassis/case can become Live if there's a fault within the equipment.

    Just had a look at the circuit on the link given which is confusing as it labels both cores of the 240v mains input cable with the number '1' which in the legend it says '1' is colour Brown and also Live. Clearly they can't both be 'Live' even though it's A.C. (alternating) current.

    I can only think that the incoming 240v Mains supply for the fridge (shown in the wiring diagram) arrives from an external perhaps remotely located on/off switch.

    Apart from that.....dunno, sorry.

    Thanks for looking, much appreciated. I think I've established its wired correctly so have now got it stood upside down. Will see if that does anything, if not replace the element, if not replace the thermostat!
