Sir,
I bought a new Q7 (3 litre -245BHP) in 2015 and tow a Hymer nova which is 8 metre and on a chassis rated 2000kg, actual weight is circa 1850 kg.
My experience was not good; my main concern was that it would not hold gear 8 unless you were motoring at >68 mph. So on many roads where it was not possible to maintain this speed the box kept hunting up and down between gears 6/7/8.
On returning from southern Italy last year the rear suspension collapsed and required a new shock/suspension unit. Guess no part was available, Audi were not not helpful would ship us home but not the caravan as it was longer than 7.5 metres. Red pennant again came to our rescue.
Then there is the tyres; uneven wear and requiring replacement within 9000 miles- audi quoted £1800 but managed to get them for £1200 from one of their other branches.
Boot looks big but the 21 inch spare takes up so much room I could not fit some of the bigger items I wish to take on holiday.
I decided to sell the car as it was not a good tow car for my needs despite what the literature reported.
I bought a BMW X5 (313BHP) wow!!-power unlimited and boy can it shift even when towing. Fuel consumption had 32mpg towing and 54 mpg (solo) with a gentle left foot. So much power it will hold gear 8 even going up hills.
Regards
Dr Brian Ellis

I can't understand this obsession with having to be in 8th gear. When accelerating, my BMW, even solo, doesn't change into 8th gear until it's reached 110mph and that is roughly the same load on the engine as if towing at a much lower speed.

From where I live most of my driving is M25 and on most occasions you only need a good handbrake and no gears.😂

I tow a twin axle 2017 Delta RI with a Q3 Quattro 2.0 TDI 184 DSG. An A7 Quattro 3.0 TDI from memory weighs more than the Q3 and the nose weight is 100Kg on them.
We tend to keep the Delta quite lightly loaded with a lot of weight going into the car. Next time we will go for something a little heavier and bigger as I'd like to put more into the caravan than in the car so we have more space, plus a bigger boot because of our dogs.
