Hello Everyone, we're off on our holidays soon and I'm route planning.  Can anyone please advise me on the best approach to Chatsworth from the North West (Lake District).

Should I take the M6, M60 leave at Junction 1 for A6 at Stockport. (It looks messy)

or M6, M61, M60 leave at Junction 24, M67 for Glossip, A624, A623.

Your help is much appreciated.

From where in the Lake District ?

If from Penrith the A66 to Scotch Corner, the A1 south to the M18.

Mark, we always use the route thro' Stockport. Not that good but was the way advised by the AA a long while ago when they supplied printed routes, and we still use that route. It's better for the journey to Chatsworth than back as it's easy to miss the turning off the A6 onto the M60 ( not well signposted.) Have not tried the Glossop route. We're from S.Cumbria too.

Try and avoid Glossop with a caravan. It is very busy. The A6 is a much better route.

Knowing the routes as they are regular haunts since childhood, use the A6 from Stockport. Check for roadwork delays at Hazel Grove where they are building the new link road - should be OK. I find traffic snarls up on the drag from the M67 up to and through Glossop.

I'm no longer a caravanner. I never use Junction 1. I come off at Junction 26 and follow the A626 towards the town centre. It brings you to a gyratory roundabout. Follow the signs for Marple [inside lane] and then you'll see signs for Buxton which will take you to the A6.

Have a look on Google Maps to see whether 26 suits you better than 1.

Hello Everyone, many thanks for your advice.

I was also thinking of this alternative - leave M6 at Knutsford, Macclesfield, Buxton.

Can anyone advise on this route?  I would like to avoid the M60 and navigating through Stockport to get onto the A6.

Otherwise it's back to plan A and M60 J27 and the A6 to Buxton.

As we live near the J27 of the M6 this is the route we use, though we leave at J20, Lymm interchange and approach Knutsford that way - no advantage really, just the way we prefer. I can recommend it, there are no serious problems and the Cat and Fiddle is a great road scenically though you need to treat those bends with respect!  Have a good trip whichever way you choose.

Mark, when we travel from the Wirral over to Buxton, we go Knutsford/Macclesfield. Susan's suggestion cuts out one of the worst parts on the M6.

I'm not a caravanner anymore and given the Macclesfield to Buxton stretch, I'm not sure how suitable it is for large caravans. However, quarry wagons and others use it and it does avoid Stockport/M60. It'll add about 10 minutes to your time.

Can I thank everyone for their wise advice concerning our route.

We are from N. Ireland and not so familiar with the road network on the mainland.

We also don't experience the same volume of traffic, living in a rural area near the North Coast.  A traffic jam for us is usually caused by a tractor!

Happy Motor/Caravanning to you all. Mark

Mark. Should you choose the Macclesfield/Buxton route you will have at least 2 steepish climbs, depending on which route you choose from Buxton, and a tow through both the towns, which can be a headache at times.

I have been to Chatsworth from North Wales more times than I can remember and, having tried most routes find that there is no really easy way from the M6. I do not like the A6 though Stockport as there are bus lanes to avoid and the local drivers are very reluctant to let a caravaner change lanes. In addition to the hassle of getting through Glosssop the Snake Pass road is quite narrow in places. Macclesfield is OK provided you are in the correct lane on the roundabouts. If using this route filter right at the first traffic lights in Buxton and straight on at the crossroads with the Ashbourne road. This deviation avoids the town centre. You can also reach Buxton from the M6 via Leek but its a long way round.
