What is the going rate for a service these days ?
I am wondering what the going rate for a caravan service is theses days
I have nothing to compare to so wondered what price would be fair

When I asked the question recently at our dealers I think they quoted something like £200 +VAT ?

We are having our caravan serviced tomorrow by a mobile service engineer, cost £150

Our dealer just charged £203 including VAT (not sure where the 3 comes from) At certain times of year it's down to £150.

Thanks for this additional feedback, very useful
Spoke to a neighbour earlier and she said she had just booked a mobile caravan service bloke @ £150
Its good to have comparisons it enables making a choice with more confidence
I may see how she gets on with this chap and if he does a good job I may book him myself
Pity my van is some miles away or I would haggle for the job at the same time
Appreciate all the feedback

Thanks for yours
It sounds like the going rate for mobile is a round £150ish and dealer £200 to £250
Ooh wonder which to choose ;-)

Hit the nail on the head there Herb, we always have a mobile engineer come to us which when you consider he has fuel to pay for to get here is somehow cheaper

We are quite well served locally with plenty of mobile and independent engineers to keep the dealers on their toes.
We went to our dealer last year because we wanted the window rubbers replacing and preferred that being done indoors. The service was £175

Maybe the mobile engineer saves money by not having to provide secure storage and insurance for 4 or 5 customers caravans, a workshop, additional car parking for several cars, pay business rates, nor do poorly reinbursed warranty work.
Probably makes extra with call outs to fix simple problems for folk on holiday.

just one final point, is your van under warranty? If so the warranty probably requires an annual service to be done by a NCC approved engineer . Most dealers are but is the mobile one?

I have paid circa £220 each time at a Swift dealer. However changed dealer due to buying a new van and noticed that they recommend an electrical systems check at 3 years old, for a grand price if £250. Never had this before as a standalone item. Anyone any knowledge or had it as well? I don't get my house wiring serviced every 3 years

I've never heard of it but you might give my dealer ideas - they tried to charge labour in changing my gas bottle during the last service.

We had the electrical check done on our current van at 3 years. I can't remember what it cost, but it was not that expensive. The Electrical Safety Council advise it is carried out every three years, although it is not a compulsory test. An NCC approved workshop should advise you about it. When you sign to approve the service, you are also probably signing to say the test was explained but you declined. That was certainly the case with our old van, which I left until 5 years old.
See screenshot from NCC website, which is hopefully readable.

The Alcotts
I use this mobile service engineer. He is NCC accredited. He is based near Daventry so may well cover your area. I think I paid about £195 for a full service which included gas, electrics and damp plus brakes and hitch etc. I also get a 10 page report of the results of all of the tests performed.
Thoroughly recommended.

You are no doubt correct, few overheads compared to the dealer but then why do I want to pay for their upkeep
I suspect dealers think that caravanners can afford it so charge what they can get away with
No different to car dealers
