l have a Coachman 460 VIP with the dreaded wip Aerial, at the moment l have one of the early Maxi View Sat's which can be a pain to lock on, here's my dilemma l fancy a Maxi view crank up fitted on the roof but others have said its better to go for the portable Maxi view precision id. The service guy at my dealer is pushing for the portable as they don't like fitting to the roof, l take it because they don't like the idea of making holes in the roof, yet he was quite willing to put Status aerial in instead of the Avtex wip which needs an hole in the roof. Anyone had the same dilemma and which one did you opt for

My 2013 Elddis Avante that I have just purchased has the Avtex whip which seems to work very well. I did ask my dealer about changing it for a directional one after reading about the problems with them and raised the question about new holes and damp. their reply was no problem, we have done loads of them and they would guarantee their work in line with the manufactures damp guarantee in the unlikely event there was a problem.

"try has l might can't get any signal at all with the wip"

Is this not another problem that your dealer needs to fix, even if you are going to use a Sat system?

With such a new caravan all the OE equipment should function as intended, and if it doesn't then it should be rectified at no cost to you. even if that means fitting a Status or other type?

I have to say, the dealer I have used twice now is brilliant. When we viewed our Elddis the factory fitted Avtex TV/DVD was missing, just the wall bracket was there. I was told at the time by the sales person that they take them out for security. When we did the hand over there was still no TV.

Not a problem they said we will order a new one have it sent to your home address.

Sorry to have side tracked your OP cool

When we bought our new caravan just over 3 years ago, we went for a Maxview fully automatic dome. Worst decision we made as it has only been working for about 1.5 of those 3 years. It is currently back being sorted again. I know you are talking about a crank up. However, it is still on the roof, and if it developes problems, unless you are able to get up there and sort it yourself, it is a return to the installer of the entire van. At least with a portable unit you could just take that back. Although I don't think I will be buying another max view product any time soon.

most reputable dealers have been installing satellite systems on roofs without issue for ages...

with the latest fixatives (sikaflex etc) the only hole required is for a cable gland, control box etc.

we had a Camos through the roof manual system which was really good and simple to operate. this same system (selfsat box) has now appeared as an auto system as the Snipe....a great simple automatic system, resistant to wind etc....other than the lack of range, i might have gone for one of these.

On the last two vans we have had a Teleco twin LNB fully auto system which we are really happy with, had it moved from the last van to this one, so easy to use....expensive but the 'dogs..'.wink

Over winter we had an Oyster 3 twin LNB autoskew 85 cm dish fitted to our m/h. Just returned from 8 weeks in France not had a problem with it.

Would say though that with a roof mounted dish you do have more issues with pitching among trees, prior to this we've  always had a free standing dish, which meant we could pitch in the shade of a tree and put the dish where ever we need it.

Just for info the van we got was not new l traded my clubman SB 2015 for the coachman, nearly straight swap had slight bit of pain which was to be expected. l have heard that Atex wip can be temperamental, work well in some area's not in others, 4g mast being one example which we have one quiet near, so l will try when we go to the lakes in a couple of weeks
