We booked Freshwater East, South Wales for our first week of our two week holiday in September. We booked it some weeks ago and are/were looking forward to it as we have not been in that area since we stayed in Saundersfoot with our three children in1984 (in an old 5 birth Europa). I have been looking at the reviews for Freshwater and there has been some recent reviews regarding the amount of dogs on site because of the nearness of a beautiful beach with no dog restrictions. To use one reviewers quote ' this site is a magnet for dogs because of the beach and he has never been on a CMC site with so many dogs' The dogs were noisy and the warden could not or would not do anything about it. We are thinking of cancelling this trip and find somewhere else but before we do I thought I would see if any members have been to this site recently and how they found it with regard to amount of dogs on site and on the beach. Please do not post nasty messages to me because I have mentioned dogs on site, I am not trying to have a go at the dog owners because we do tolerate the amount of dogs on site, we have no choice, but this site sounds excessive.

We live very near Freshwater East beach and walk there often. It's true that many dog walkers use it, but it's a huge beach - plenty of room for everyone.

As for the site, I cannot comment as, obviously, we don't stay there. But are not all sites well used by dog owners? We use UK sites very seldom as we spend most of our time elsewhere. This May / June though we are touring in the UK using club (both) sites and we have noticed that there are many dog owners on most of the sites which we have visited. This is just an observation  and not a judgement; if they are not causing a nuisance it's not a problem.

Don't let the reviews put you off. It's a beautiful area. And there are other beaches - and campsites - available. If it helps, Whitesands Beach near the St David's, Lleithyr Meadow Club Site has a total dog ban until the end of September.

Broadside, you may instead like  to consider Windmill Hill Caravan Park which is also in the Pembroke area.

We visited this site a few years ago and don't remember it being different to any other site, in relation to dogs. Looking at the recent reviews, there only seems to be the one that is overly critical. Unfortunately this is the nature of reviews, tolerance to noise levels is very subjective. It is a lovely area, with plenty to see in the locality and good walks along the coast direct from the site. I would not be put off.

Yes I remember it well. Because it is so steep I thought I would go out and warm the car engine up before towing up it.

Picked up a puncture while doing it.☹️

We've stayed there (with our dogs) it is worth a visit, the beach is a bonus as that's all there is, you'll need to walk or drive to see other places locally. The adjoining NT Stackpole Estate is lovely with wonderful walks on the coast and to Barafundle Bay. It's a good base to see that part of Pembrokeshire with some very beautiful scenery to explore.

We couldn’t get in at Freshwater for the dates we wanted so we've booked Windmill Hill.  It sounds like a nice site, but no doubt we will see in due course. laughing

We have been to Freshwater before, some years ago (before we had a dog) and we not especially conscious of the dogs.  However we did spot one family who had a menagerie of different animals all of which had their own cages - including a parrot in the awning!!!

I rarely take much notice of other people's reviews. Often the type of person that leaves a review are those that want to have a moan about somewhere & not have anything positive to say. I remember one review about the site at St David's saying that the crows were noisy!! undecidedRecently an unfavourable review about Chirk was commented on CT. We'd only recently been & could believe they were talking about the same place.

IMHO if you want to find fault with somewhere/thing, you will if you're that kind of person. In the main, people go somewhere to enjoy themselves, so they do. Besides, do dogs on a site really have much impact on others?

I do often read reviews on UKCampsite.co.uk as it deals with non-Club sites.  However I often check and compare reports by the same person on different sites to get a feel for how that person reviews other sites etc.  I tend not to worry to much about the reviews on here as most CAMC sites tend to be fine.

Loads of good CLs in that area - cheaper, more room, less dogs, less noise etc etc - Heath Cottage for example.

Thank you all for your replies. I agree with the point regarding reviews and I do ignore the (for example) the very negative review just because the warden did not bow and scrape to them but I do feel that the reviews do give a good cross section of the site by reading through them and ignoring the 'have a go reviewers'  I am still not sure if this is the site for us and we are now looking at the (as mentioned) St. Davids site. Thanks again for the input, it never ceases to amaze me the amount of experience and knowledge that many of members have on this forum

Look on Google Earth before you do.   It is directly under the National Grid pylons from Pembroke Power station

A long time ago towed a small caravan with a Rover 214 up that hill - didn't know it was there until we arrived and so worried during the hols as to how we would cope going back up. Shouldn't have.
