Caravan insurance, check your policy

Members may already be aware of this but it was news to me.

When insuring the caravan when asked where do you store your van we give the details of the storage compound. However if you have your caravan at your home for packing, cleaning etc the insurance will only cover the caravan for a short period of time. It was 48 hours in our case.  

We have had our caravan at home for well over a week on occasions and had it been stolen we would have had a major problem. 

We now specify both storage and our home address on the policy.

    When we insured with the C&MC it allowed you to bring home the van for 72 hours to pack, clean etc. which was fine for us.

    I guess if you have both addresses on you lose the discount for being on a Cassoa gold site?

    Oddly enough no it didn't!!

    We were renewing with the Camping & Caravan club insurance and adding our home address made no difference to the premium. 

    Also the premium reduced by £40 when I said the storage site had been upgraded from silver to gold.

    Good point Natasha - I also got a reduction as I pointed out my van wasn't worth as much as it was last year!

    Hi Natasha2.......thanks for this information which I was also not aware of....I contacted insurance services and they confirm that I can only have it at home for 72 hrs or l will lose my 5 percent discount...this for me would be 24 pounds....it's due for renewal next month I may change it just for convenience....it seems it's my fault for not reading the paperwork...but this is worth highlighting so you don't fall foul of the rules unwittingly....David
