Last year we bought a 2004 Bailey, last week while away the fridge only went down to 5-6c on gas, on electric at home down to 3c

any advice as to what it is, thanks

I don't know where you were last weekend, but down here in the South it was incredibly hot.  Our fridge was certainly struggling on gas. The burner was on almost continuously day and night, and this reflected in the quantity of gas used.  It doesn't help that ours vents into the awning, which on this occasion was facing South.  Fortunately  the freezer section was still happily making ice  smile.

Fans to aid air circulation over the condenser can help, but only if there is some cooler air available to circulate.

In my experience van fridges get colder on lekky than on gas. I suspect 5-6 isn't bad.

Having come from a food production background in the past 5 Degrees should be OK the safe zone is 5 degrees or under to limit bacteria from breading (note limit its growth not stop it if it smells bad it is bad however it was stored).

If the weather is hot it sounds about right to me.We store vunerable things in the bottom of the fridge in the salad container on the door as it can be a good couple of degrees cooler at the bottom than the top..We also try to park up so the side with the vents is not facing south in sunny weather it all makes a difference

Caravan fridges should run colder on Gas its there Primary Fuel source but the burner definitely needs to be serviced regularly and run on Propane not Butane, Gas is supposed to be more efficient particularly in warm weather. Once a month fire up your Fridge on Gas too, this keeps the burner free from spidery things and cobwebs :)

I have found that all of the fridges I have had over the years work better on gas. The previous Thetford fridge freezer was useless on electricity and didn't keep food frozen. My current Dometic one does but needs a higher setting when on electric.

Every caravan we've had in the past were fitted with Thetford fridges, they always struggled in really hot weather but did keep food frozen.

The m/h we have now has a Dometic fridge, what a difference. Even at 30+ the fridge performs well on both leccy and gas, in fact I only ever have it set at half on the dial once its cold, anymore than this and I have frozen salad.laughing 27 hours on a ferry and the food was still frozen in the freezer box and the fridge was still cold. Would agree with position of the van helps try and get the vents in the shade side, if you can't try and give them some shade, we use wind blockers or a sun umbrella.

i agree our last two Dometics seem to be better thsn the previous two Thetfords, id also say that they work well on both fuels.

with our fridge on the same side as the door/awning its likely to be facing the sun, hower no performance issues to date.....half setting generally more than enough.

Same here Dometic seem better than Thetford.  Another thing is do not whack it up to 5 as this seems to make the fridge go into overdrive and create more heat, normally find 2 or 3 setting is fine, 2 in cooler months and 3 in summer..
