Touring Scotland

We intend to tour Scotland this September with friends from Switzerland.  A possible slight hiccup is that they intend to bring either a converted army truck with trailer or a converted Swiss coach.  Both of these rigs will be over 12 metres and we do anticipate difficulties in finding sites large enough to accommodate this.  Does anyone have any experience, recommendations with regard to site access?

We will have our trusty Buccaneer clipper and tow car so we will be in charge of the touring around sites of interest without problem.  It is obviously the large vehicles that are causing us some concern.

Any help greatly appreciated.

kind regards to all

You'll likely fare better with C&CC or commercial sites. I can't honestly see CAMC welcoming the units you describe.

As for access, it depends where you go and which sites you choose. The telephone will be your friend for contacting sites and asking.

    Hi William,

I have seen large rigs on both sites in Ullapool. I think it was old single decker buses with trailers. Haven't used the one in town, but can recommend Ardmair Point. Even some of the beachside pitches are long enough for you or your friend, if you're lucky enough to get one. But if not, there's plenty of room and good access on-site.

I can't say for definite but as long as you stick to the main roads, even a rig that size should be ok, as even the single track main roads take lorries.

Having travelled a few of them with a large 4 x 4 and a twin axle, we never encountered a problem or even came close having to reverse to a passing place on a single track.

Have a great trip. I am jealous, Alex.

You would  be  well  advised  to  check  the  individual  club  sites  in  the  C & M C  Handbook  William P  'cos  they  tend  to  say  if  there  is  any  restriction  on  unit  length  on  each  page.

I have seen converted coaches and even 5th wheels with a truck cab at North Ledaig near Oban, they have hard standing pads for over large vehicles so shouldn't be an issue for them but would advise to call ahead so they can reserve one for your friends.

If you are looking for a site near Edinburgh try Linwater caravan park.  They have some pitches that can take large units.  Sorry don't have contact details to hand.

As suggested by others I would telephone first to check, but think that you would be ok at Sango Sands at Durness and The Sands at Gairloch, both commercial sites.

Thank you to everyone who replied.  We now have some planning to do, but once again, thanks very much.  Kind regards
