Route to Fishguard ferry port

My wife and I are taking our caravan over to Ireland, travelling on the Fishguard-Rosslare ferry.  I'm after some advice on the best route to take to get to Fishguard from our home near Shrewsbury in Shropshire.  After heading west into Wales and down the A483 through Welshpool and Newtown, there seem to be two main options at Newtown:

(1) Keep to the A483 to LLandovery, then the A40 to Fishguard;

(2) Take the A470 then A44 to Aberystwyth and then the A487 to Fishguard.

Route (2) is shorter by 24 miles according to Google, but I'm a bit concerned that the final few miles are through Fishguard town itself, which route (1) avoids.  Would appreciate any comments  on the nature of either of these routes with respect to suitability for towing.  Don't mind taking the longer route if it's more straightforward for towing.

    Mike,

    No need to worry about Fishguard town. There is a by pass around the town to the ferry port. It may not have shown up on your map if it's an old version.

    Coming from Aberystwyth - Cardigan you will have to travel through lower Fishguard town, but if you travel on the A40 you will be travelling on the bypass. The biggest problem is the narrow stretch of road as you come down into Lower town then a right angled corner and the  very steep hill up to Fishguard town. Articulated lorries do not use this route.

    Your route 2 on A487 is tricky as the part through Lower Town before the sharp right turn over the river is very tight single lane with no pavements.  Lorries do use it (not sure about full size arctics) and that is part of the problem because if you were unlucky to meet one coming the other way it would cause a jam and some serious reversing by the lorry or you would be required.  Take a look on Google street view, it is only a short section (circa 150 yards) but is one of those "squeeky bum" spots !

    Many thanks all for your helpful replies.  Accordingly I shall take the advice and use the longer route (1) so as to approach Fishguard on the A40 and thus bypass the town.
