The flush switch on my toilet seems to need replacing regularly, is it possible to make it a manual flush.

The size and design of the manual flush toilet is different to that of the electric - it's not just a different 'cistern' and flushing mechanism,, but seat heat, etc.  and you probably will have to replace the whole toilet.  I would think the best thing to do is to ring or email Thetford, or ask your dealer to see if it's possible to replace one with another.   Thetford website.

If the switch is really such a problem I suppose that it could be replaced with a simple bell push switch

I had a problem one but after advice not to travel with water in the flush tank at least 2 years ago it has been fine.  It was also suggested that drying it with a hairdryer would save replacing.  Unless the new mechanic did something to it travelling empty has worked for me.

Thanks everyone, I have tried just replacing the switch again but now i find i have a broken wire further away from the switch itself. I will make a point on emptying the tank after use.

It does seem daft to have a portable toilet that by design should not be used when travelling.  That's the very time it is most needed!

We use ours whilst travelling all the time, pulling into lay-bys when necessary - I must admit I thought everyone did.  We keep just enough in the flush tank to flush two or three times, and empty the cassette before setting off so there's not too much sloshing about!  Ours isn't 'modern enough' to have a warning light though, we have to decide ourselves when it needs emptying (which to be honest only involved looking down when the valve is open - not difficult, I would have thought!!)

I also have had an ongoing problem with the switch - actually a printed circuit board (PCB) - which sits inside the compartment at the top of the toilet. There seems to be an issue with water ingress in the compartment which, as far as I can see, can only be coming from the flush tank

Following advice from a mobile engineer, I have unscrewed the panel inside the compartment and put silicon sealant round it before screwing it back and have also put sealant over the rubber grommet which carries the wires. In addition I have smeared Vaseline over the contacts.

The engineer also recommended that we do not travel with a lot of water in the flush tank.

We haven't been away in the van since I did these things so I don't know if I have solved the problem - fingers crossed!

I know this may sound crass, but is it really necessary to rely on the indicator to tell you that the cassette is full ? To me the indicator just seems another thing which can go wrong.  Just look down when using the loo and you'll know when it needs to be emptied!  We do - and we've never had anything go wrong.

Sometimes thing are just to easy. We have a small problem in our van. One person fills the loo and another empties it and guess  who that might be. We have never seen the full light come on as the "filler" always tells the "emptier" when it's time. Yes dear!!

I have no idea whether it works in our caravan or not. I must have emptied the cassette at least 28 times a year and the van is 5 years old. I have seen the light work once a good number of years ago on the previous 'van when I knew it was due for emptying but decided to leave it overnight and empty th next morning before departure.

The big question is, how many "go's" can yo get away with after it lights up?

I would get quite a fright if the light came on!   Being lazy, I empty it every three days or so as at half-full it is easier to carry.

Maybe Thetford are at this very moment designing a three colour upgrade to signal "OK", "Maybe" and "No Way".

well on the thetford model in my first van (1999) the indicator was a rotating cylinder which had colours on it, and would rotate round to red from green. The kids at the time were avid watches of this and when the indicator turned to red, they would shout the poos on the turn.

Like others I empty it every three days for just the two of us

Actually I can't wait for a voice warning, perhaps like your sat nav with different voices?

I personally would want a star trek computer voice, warning: warp core emergency ejection recomended

The Star Trek comment reminds me of the old joke

Easy estimate MM. We generally stay 5 nights on a site. On a facility site the loo is emptied the night before departure. We visit 20 sites like this for the year. Hence 20 empties. However a few are no facility and emptying more than once - so plus 4 = 24.

We stay 15 nights over Christmas in addition and guess 4 empties takes us to 28.

No need for a tally MM smile

The falling level of blue fluid in the bottle makes for a good tally.
