Towing speed !

It is the kinetic energy that is really worrying as speed increases. The formula is multiply half the mass (weight) by the square of the speed.
So if the speed is 50 units then its contribution to the energy calculation is 250, if the speed is 60 units then the contribution is 360. That is more or less half as much again for an increase in the speed of 20%. For 70 speed units the contribution is 490, so the energy in the moving object is twice what it is at 50 units.
All that energy has to go somewhere when something goes wrong!

Going faster just boosts the oil companies profits.

Towing at more than 60 mph increases the chances of getting to site before those that have taken the time to meticulously plan on arriving at bang on the designated arrival time. This gives a greater opportunity to select the very best pitch with the correct sun aspect, distance from the toilet block, the best possible view from your front window and only having a neighbour to one side of your van. Safety of others can DO ONE!!! All of the above is way more important.

Just to extend this a bit further, if my maths are correct, the time difference in driving 10 miles at 70 compared with 60mph would be 1.38 minutes (98 seconds). Is it really worth the extra stress and increased fuel consumption by driving above the legal limit just to save this tiny amount of time? Even on a 100 mile journey the time saved would be less than a quarter of an hour and that is only if you could maintain a constant 70mph for the whole journey

Since there is nothing I can do about speeding caravans or anything else for that matter I simple try and avoid them and let their drivers live or die as they wish. I do get slightly miffed when they block the road in front of me as has happened on too many occasions.

I'm guessing that those people who you believe are speeding are also the same ones who believe their dog doesn't need a lead whilst on site or and can read the signs their respective owners can't, the 5 mph limit doesn't apply to them and they can arrive on site anytime the like......Just another rule to be ignored because they know better.........

I thought this was about caravans speeding on the roads rather than site rules and dogs off leads.

I now tow around 55 mph set the cruise control and get there safe . never been one for travelling at 70 the chance of getting out of trouble is slim and I have a responsibility to my wife and my two dogs to get them to our destination in one piece. plus mpg is better .

I drove home the other day at around 50/55 on a very soggy A1/M1 .... you could see sod all in front or behind due to spray .... maybe they could see more due to being higher up, but they carried on at 56 regardless
I just flashed them back in .... though quite a few seemed as though they couldn't wait for a flash & wanted to take my front bumper with them.

I used to tow at 56mph with my Volvo XC70 but now have a new XC90 and I have noticed it is better on fuel at 60mph so I set the Cruise and leave it there unless traffic conditions need different setting. I think the reason for the better fuel consumption is the 8 speed box on the new car as opposed to the 6 speed on the old car. As others have said I still get overtaken by other caravan towers but I just leave them to it .

Drove home from Wiltshire today. going there last week and coming back today all the cars towing caravans were keeping to the speed limits on the A 303. M3 & M25 but vans towing plant trailers and a couple cars towing car transporter trailers were flying by me and I was doing a steady 60mph. Also on the way down, on the A 303, there was Toyota HiLux with a large twin axle trailer that had jackknifed leaving the car in a ditch facing the wrong way on the carriage way. Police were in attendance talking to driver and his mate, they didn't look happy?

Personally the increase in fuel used at 70 from 60 is enough to put me off. I did witness the dangers of that speed a couple of years back though. We were doing about 60 on the M6 just North of Carlisle. A car towing a large Hobby passed at a speed well in excess of 60 and approached a line of lorries in front of us. At that point the driver lost it and it snaked from one side of the carriageway to the other narrowly missing the lorries.
I will give the driver his due, he was reckless but did manage to control the snake and eased into a gap in between the lorries before setting off again at high speed probably to the nearest services to change his trousers.

A couple of years ago we were driving solo on the autoroute in Spain towards France. We were going at about 70mph. A Belgium Berlingo towing a small caravan overtook us and developed quite a snake. As he passed other vehicles ahead of us he continued to snake. He was about 200 yds ahead of us when he snaked badly and his offside caravan tyre disintegrated. Cars, lorries etc had to take evasive action to avoid him and the debris coming from his outfit. Fortunately he managed to come to a halt without hitting anything but left a great deal of debris on the road most of which was non rubber! Ok his tyre may have been faulty but his excessive speed was probably a major contributor to the incident. A very shaken couple got out of the car.

Its illegal, but you can sometimes exceed 60 when overtaking!
better than the idiots that sit in the middle lanes at 50mph!0 -
It's a belter isn't it, all I know is that it's a Leyland bus. It was parked up outside Burrs Country Park Caravan Club site a few years ago. I think it'd been used as a shuttle from the nearby East Lancs Railway station in Bury town centre. I just happend to be in the right place while walking molly the Mutt.

MM, I think that is a Leyland Lowbridge. The double decker version was called the Highbridge.
Perhaps someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I think it's probably a Leyland Tiger Chassis, No idea who the body builder would have been though?

Thanks, Rocky. I must admit to having second thoughts about the model after I'd posted. The Tiger it is then and a beautiful bus.
