Just come back from nearly 3 weeks away in Yorks and Durham. We started at a rally, 4 nights with entertainment on 3 , a meal each night and day time activities all for £55 for 2 people and unit.  Then to a commercial site south east of York for  nights, hard standing with 16 amps and shower block etc, just over £14 a night.   A CL in Durham for £12 a night. Here we had 10 amps and were welcomed with half a dozen eggs from the hens in a nearby  run. Then to Chesterfield club site for £23 a night. A lovely site with welcoming wardens but so crowded and noisy, yapping dogs and loud people. (There were children about many playing on bikes and on and off the roads which was fine but what surprised me was the speed which members drove round the site.)  Next week to a THS at £8 a night.  I am not mean but think if I can save £5 a night over the 150 nights we will be out we can afford a week in a hotel in Spain in January.

Club sites are generally in line with prices for commercial ones but do remember the club has to cover the costs of wardens and the like with strict working hours rules and minimum wages. Overheads vary so even comparing costs from one site to the next with similar backgrounds is not possible.

CL's should always be cheaper as they are basically a side line for the owners and not a business and most supplement the owners income rather than provide it. Smaller commercial sites are often family run and this allows them to circumvent the rules the clubs and larger operators have to follow so the comparisons are simply not fair.

Yes you can save money in the way suggested, but that does not mean the club is overcharging, but that it simply charges on the basis of what it costs them to run the sites.

Sorry BC only just seen your post.  Site is South Lea at Pocklington. My £14 was an average over 5 nights.  Bus stop at gate with hourly service to York, about 45 minutes on bus. The site is "listed " in the other club's book.
