Hi We have just been touring 2 years now I wonder if any one could give me an estimated time it would take towing a 2 berth from Bawtry to Burnham on Sea. Thanks

Thats a distance of around 220 miles. Both locations are close to the motorway network, so assuming an average speed of 50mph the journey should take about four and a half hours not including any stops you may wish to make.

Hope you have a good trip.

This is a difficult question as different people tow at different speeds take more breaks and so on. My own rule of thumb is to use an average speed of 45pmh, I've just 'adopted' this figure due to that its seems to work for me over many years (18) and leaves some slack time due to roadworks and other things. That give about 5 hours, or that's what I would expect. After a while you'll begin to get a feel for your own owing if you haven't already. I wouldn't put too much trust in your sat nav or google maps

I always find it difficult to judge travel time as there are so many factors involved, and the longer the journey the less predictable it is:  Road works, accidents, natural congestion (rush hour - why do they call it rush hour when no one appears to be rushing anywhere), toilet breaks, meal breaks, smart motorway variable speed limits etc.

Whenever I work out 'how long', I always add on 'a lot' for contingencies.

Hi Susan, we don't live far from you, and know the journey to the SW very well using a variety of routes. On a good run, using the main motorways, perhaps with a short comfort break, I would say most folks estimates are spot on, around 4.5-5 hours. Our top tip would be to avoid being near Bristol between 3.30pm and 7pm, as given all the routes converging, and the shopping outlets etc.. along the M5 it can be horrendously busy, especially at weekends and holiday periods. If you do use M5 down to Bristol, then Gloucester services are by far the nicest. I would take a good look on websites and see where roadworks are, and most of the service stations now have traffic update boards to help commuters.

If you decide to take a more leisurely approach to all motorways, then let me know, and we might be able to give you an alternative route that is far more interesting, has some good easy access stops, but will still get you down there fairly quickly. Safe journey!smile

I'd go with about 5 hours, maybe a bit less on a Sunday

Add a couple of hours and bypass Burnham on your way further South West.

Agree I also give myself around 45mph. It seems to work, barring any roadworks, incidents etc. 200 miles I give myself 5hours. Anything before is a bonus. Enjoy.

    Remember, don't turn-up before midday!

In general - I use Googlemaps to find the time then add 25% for towing a 'van.

I use Viamichelin route planner. It's been pretty accurate time wise and allows you to state caravan. Used a lot last year on a 10 week euro tour.

The Burnham on Sea site is very good, and has a second advantage  as well, because its only a couple of miles from Highbridge caravans who have an excellent caravanning shop, for those things that you might have left behind by accident!

I have bought all my caravans from there after returning to caravanning in 1992 after a break in the mid eighties. IMHO they are reliable and trustworthy.

Finally I have travelled from this end of the world to the Bawtry area, towing and agree with those who say 5 hours. But that is the time for a straight run. I would actually say nearer 6 if you are like me and would want a mid distance break for a cuppa.

We keep a log of all journeys, now going back some 20 years (we realised the advantage after 30 odd years of wondering 'how long'). Now we can just refer back to previous trips and guess pretty accurately. We tend to average around 45 mph if it's mainly m/way, 38/40 otherwise - plus stops.
